I recently picked up a slightly used MIM Stratocaster. The neck and frets, which some people say are second rate, are perfect. The only thing I am not 100% satisfied with are the pickups. I play blues, rock and country and would appreciate any input regarding upgrading the pickups.

I agree. They cover a lot of ground, including all you've specified.

Now, if you want to go the single coil humbucking route, I'd recommend the DiMarzio Virtual Vintage Area 58/58/61 combo.

you should try dimarzio's HS-3, or virtual vintage solo.

You mention country as something you play. Let me suggest Seymour Duncans double coil stack.

I put custom shop fat 50's in my MIM and like them a lot.

However, unless there is a certain tone you're after why do you want to change them. The mim pups are not bad at all IMHO. They have more output than many fender american pups while still sounding absolutely stratty.

My big question is what are you not happy with? What do you want that it's not giving you now?

I would also like to endorse the DiMarzio Virtual Vintage Area 58/61/67 for dead quiet but single coil sound.

I put vintage noiseless in my MIM strat but there are a ton of choices... I suggest you check out Lace. http://www.lacemusic.com/

I upgraded the pups on my MIM HSS Strat with Seymour Duncans. I was not dissapointed. You can go to WWW.seymourduncan.com and use the ToneWizard to help you with your pup choice depending on what style music you play.

I might suggest the pups are not your real problem. The thing with MIM strats is the trem block. it's made of pot metal and kills the tone. you can get an awsome upgrade from http://www.callahamguitars.com for about $75 or try http://www.specialtyguitars.com/trem.html . I use this block in two MIM strats and it improved the tone a thousand times. also if you really want to change out the pups you might want to try the custom 69's. Try Ebay for the best price on new sets. Well I hope this helps.

I also appreciate all the suggestions made regarding the different pickup options. What is the brand of the standard MIM strat PUs?

I have vintage 57/62's in my MIM Strat. Mine also came with a Luthier going over the neck, so the frets are like silk and the set up is perfect. The weak link, in my opinion, with MIM Strats are the electronics. The neck and bodies have come a long long ways in the last ten years! That said, I've purchased a few custom wired pickup sets from Owen Duffy. Google Owen Duffy Pickups and you should find him. Email the guy, and tell him what you are looking for. He will provide some suggestions. His prices are reasonable and his turn around is fairly quick. I've always gone with his suggestions and have been satisfied. Lindy Fralin makes Strat pickups and I once tried their Vintage Hots and liked them.
