Good day. I just purchased a Fender Strat with locking tuners. I've never used anything but standard tuners before. How do locking tuners work, and how do you set them up correctly?

Try reading the owner's manual. If you don't have one, then read this.:

That pretty much says it.
I usually give the string a little slack for just a few winds around the post, but other than that:
Lace the String through the eye like normal,
lock down on the thumbwheel that closes the eye by turning it clockwise,
tune to the string,
clip the excess,
rock steady

dfrain , locking tuner don't need turns around post . Put string in the hole straight , that 's it. Few turns could be a problem for good tuning.

The owner's manual and the link I provided above clearly explain how to string locking tuners.

I'd like to add one more very important step......
(I have 12 guitars....ALL with Fender/Schaller locking tuners)

1: put string in hole
2: pull the string very tight until an audible note sounds...
3: Lock string in place with note still sounding.....
4: tune......within 3-4 turns it should be in tune...

This method work wonders for me.....hasn't ever failed!

Good Luck!..................

Relevant section of guide posted above:

Quote:
Picture the headcap of the neck as the face of a clock, with the top being 12:00 and the nut being 6:00.

Line the six tuning machines so that the first string keyhole is set at 1:00, the second at 2:00, the third and fourth at 3:00, the fifth at 4:00, and the sixth at 5:00.

Pull the strings through tautly and tighten the thumb wheel, locking the string in. Now tune to pitch
.

Yeah the best advice was given above by someone; you have to make sure that the string is put through the tuner and pulled really tight, leave no slack in it or it's defeating the purpose of the tuners. Plus you don't need windings round the posts for locking tuners. Straight in the post, pull really tight, lock the thumbwheels tight, that's it. 8)

Yes, thanks to all. I did read the manual but you know when you've never used a thing before, it's still good to hear what experienced people have to say.

Thanks again to all.

From low E to high E: the hole should be at 5 o'clock, 4, 3, 3, 2, 1. Pull the strings tight and lock them in. Tune to your favorite tuning preference.

]Well, almost a year since the last post on this topic, but hey, people buy new guitars every day!

Just plowed through every bit of paper that came with my new American Deluxe Strat with locking tuners, and nothing mentions how to deal with them. So the info here was very useful, despite the few "RTFM" type comments.

God, I am loving this guitar!

PS I take it all back, it is in the manual. So I guess I skimmed the manual rather than reading it. I guess I was to excited about plugging in and playing to pay attention to the details. So I concur with the several posts that suggested "RTFM". The link in one post is quite useful, I have bookmarked it.
