Hello Everyone!

I'm new to this site, new to guitars, heck... other than a little bit of harmonica, I'm new to playing music altogether. I was out at the local pawn shop and just found a 1993 MIA Strat for only $100 and I couldn't let it slip by. I guess it's time for me to finally make my dream of learning how to play a reality. I haven't torn into it yet, so I don't know the condition or the make of any of the electronics... but at only $100, I think I have a few hundred in change to replace any and everything inside of it that might be dead. This is where I need help... any recomendations?

My musical interests are pretty diverse... I'd like to play everything from Pink Floyd/David Gilmour to Jimmy Buffett. (I'll probably stick mostly with Buffett... at least to begin.)

Any suggestions as to what pickups to install to have an all-around good sounding Strat?

Thanks!
Ziggy...

I forgot to mention... right now, no sound at all comes out when I plug it in to an amp... so I can't just play it "as-is". Something is DEFINITELY amiss inside. That's why it was so cheap. :)

My suggestion would be to take it to a guitar tech and have it checked out before you go putting money into it.

Thanks Chet!

I took your advice and brought it to a tech. Here's what I found out: it is, in fact working... the pawn shop must've had a bad amp or cord.

- Made in USA, 1993
- Floyd Rose tremolo
- All three single coil pickups are working and matched 5.9k
- 11-49 strings
- dropped D tuning

His reccomendations were to leave the electronics all alone, switch to a lighter string for learning, and standard tuning. Does that sound like he's putting me on the right track?

Thanks!!!

Excellent! Sounds like you found a good tech, put him on the payroll and keep him around.
That is good advice from him.

the electronics in the guitar might be screwd up so unless you know what your doing and know what to look for id go to a shop and have him set it all back up. It needs to work before you go and put money into it you might find it to be a waste of time :D

Yep sound like he is....the pickups are prolly the original stock pickups and changing to standard gauge strings would be ideal for beginners compared to the existing heavt gauge....
He'll prolly have to to a full setup for the guitar if you decide to change to a smaller gauge and that would be good...

Good luck Ziggy!

...The only think that might be wrong with the guitar is a dead volume pot or a broken wire...sounds like you got a good deal! Good luck in your learning!
