Are these Guitar Center only guitars? I noticed they weren't announced when the rest of the Modern Players came out but were quietly added later. Did Fender realize they made a mistake by not making a MP Strat? And how much difference is there between the MP HSS and a Mexican HSS Standard?

The Modern Player has 22 frets while the Standard has 21.

All Modern Players are made in China.

They are not Guitar Center only, they are now available at most guitar places that sell Fenders. I bought mine from Musician's Friend. They only just came available last month. Some stores still don't have them. It is one of the few Fender Strats that has humbucker with coil splitting and tone control. I had tried many versions of the Squier strats before and was not impressed with the quality of their neck and frets (rough edges). My Modern Player is a pleasure to play, no rough edges.

The Modern Players are nothing more than Squier Standards without the logo and all the gimmicks Fender can produce. But honestly, the Classic Vibe series are great sounding guitars and many (like myself) just don't want to see "Squier" on the headstock...

For that matter, if you can live with the Squier name, their Deluxe Stratocaster is another alternative to consider for about $100.00 less than the "Fender" branded MP Strat (but you'll need to find a humbucker and possibly a new pickguard if you want a Fat Strat though).

Have you played one? The feel is much different from a Standard.

The closest "Squier" would be the Vintage Modified HSS for $300. However, I believe the closest quality wise (if you are only considering cost) could be the Classic Vibes $380-400 (though I haven't touched one). I have played the Squier standards in the local stores (which go for around $800 in Japan) and they are not even close to quality level of my Modern Player. The Squier Standard strats feel just like one of those $99-180 package Bullet or Affinity Strats.

You all can nit pick and try to knock on the Modern Player. But, unless you have picked one up and played it (OR OWN ONE) you are only guessing. And you are guessing wrong.

The Modern Player is priced between the Squier Classic Vibe and Fender MIM Standard Strats. With a quality that is as good or better than the MIM strats (though I am sure there are some lemons out there). Even so, most musicians say there are maybe 10% exceptional in the MIA and MIM lines, the rest are average. So I go back to my statement unless you have played it don't knock it. You can find good and bad guitars in all of the price ranges.

I am glad to have a quality Fender Stratocaster HSS that cost me $100 less than a MIM one.

I'm not nitpicking on the MP HSS Strat at all. Although I haven't played one, it seems like a pretty cool guitar at a great price. I think it's great that Fender is offering some nice guitars in all price ranges and that if one can overcome the stigma of having a Squier branded guitar there are a few other options that may (or may not) appeal to you. BTW; I dig that silverburst finish.

 My comment wasn't directed specifically at you. Just generally at those who really don't know what they are talking about.

I also am not knocking on the Squiers. The MIM Fender Squier strat, my friend has, is very nice. Just haven't seen any I like in the stores yet.

We all are left with the guitars that we can afford.

No big. I may be looking at a Modern Player for myself as I wasn't one of the three lucky folks who hit it big in the Mega Millions this past weekend. Oh well...you've got a better chance of being struck by lightning anyway (and that's exactly what happened to one guy who had purchased some tickets a few hour prior - he's alright though).

My Marauder is every bit as good as my Mexican Strats.

I'd have bought my Marauder even if I had won the lottery. In fact, I'd buy all the MP guitars, Squiers, and maybe even an Epiphone or two. I wouldn't play only PRS electrics and Martin acoustics.

My avatar pic is a Deluxe Strat. Its a Fender Deluxe Roadhouse body with three Texas Specials. The neck is a Deluxe Lonestar neck. All hardware was replaced with gold. Awesome guitar. The Deluxe Lonestar has two Texas Specials and a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates humbucker.... I didn't like it because the output difference was crazy. Huge volume jump.

I just received my Modern Play HSS (Silverburst), today! I am extremely happy with every aspect of it! I have owned a crap-load of Strats in my time, as I am sure many of you have, and like me, I am also sure that we have all had good and bad Strats of nearly every model from nearly every country, right?
I guess it's that way with every guitar brand though. I know my Modern Player surpasses my expectations!
I just sold both a 50's Classic Vibe Olympic White Squier Strat & Tele recently. They were phenomenal guitars and there have been many comparisons in the Forum between the Vibes & the Modern Players. I loved the Squiers but Holy Cow, the Player out shines them! This is only my opinion and, at least in my case, I have gotten a gem of a Strat "Player".
