Hey, everybody- Acquired an '11 Deluxe Players Strat about a month ago. I may actually be IN LOVE with this guitar (not to be TOO corny...). One concern, though- when I switch to pup pos. 5 (neck pup alone), the tone is much brighter than I would expect. Rolling off the tone knob gets me the sound I want, but the output drops WAY down- gotta dime the vol. knob (having started @ 3 or 4) to keep the same level. I can live w/this, but I'm wondering if something is not quite right w/ my guitar's wiring. Bought it brand new, by the way, so if something is amiss, it came from the factory that way... Whaddaya kids think?

Something's not right there as clearly, that is not a normal situation. You may want to have the guitar looked at.

I agree with Martian - have it checked/use the warranty.

Guitar's in the shop as I write this- it would have been bone-headed to have just let it be. Bad experiences with the chain from whom I got the guitar made me reluctant to bring it back to them, but come to find out that a smaller indie shop near me does Fender warranty work, so I took it to them. Just thought it worthwhile to ask if anybody had experienced similar problems with tone/output...

Did you check the neck pickup height in relation to the strings before taking it in? It may have just been too close on the treble side. Other than the tone pot not being connected to the neck pickup or some other major wiring error (highly unlikely, I should think), that would be the only reason I can think of for the pickup to sound bright. Keep in mind that what sounds bright to you may sound perfectly normal to the repair tech.

Both of the guys behind the counter agreed that the sound was way more trebly than it should be- we'll see what the tech thinks. Wouldn't have worried about it had the output not dropped off drastically when I rolled off the tone...

You didn't answer my question and volume drops when the tone control is rolled off all the way regardless.

Actually, first thing I did when I noticed the problem was to adjust the pickup height- no help. There's little noticeable tone difference between positions 3 and 5 (or 1, for that matter). And the output drops out to the point where the guy in the store at first thought the tone control was actually set up as a straight up volume knob. We're talkin' serious drop-off here...

Did you try playing with the pushbutton switch to see if it made a difference?

Yup- I could definitely hear a difference, both with the tone dimed or rolled off.

Well, it will be interesting to see what the shop finds, if anything.

Just got back from the guitar shop. The plot thickens... The tech noticed that the output drops off when the Tone1(neck pup) is rolled all the way back ONLY when Tone2(middle pup) is set at 10. W/Tone2 set at 1, volume stays consistent, as it should. He checked the wiring with a factory diagram, and re-soldered all the joints. Nothin'. He then called Fender, and was told that this was the first time they'd heard of this problem- lucky me. At this point, I decided that I can live with this, rather than have them start replacing components, or whatever. Can always invoke the warranty later, if it starts to bug me...

That's ridiculous. The wiring is not so complicated that a problem, if one exists, couldn't be easily found. I think you need to find a more competent tech or better yet, take it back to where you got it and demand a new guitar under warranty. That's what it is for.
