Does anyone know who makes the 'new' locking tuners (with the 'F' on the thumbscrew)? I've heard them referred to as 'junk', so I'm guessing Schaller doesn't make them anymore? Ping, maybe? Anyone have personal experience with both?

Thanks!
Pat

I have a 04' American Deluxe with locking tuners... they are fantastic... no "F" on them though.

Thanks for the responses. I didn't think they would put junk on the American Deluxes, but was wondering why everyone talked the new versions down.

Thanks,
Pat

they dont talk them down, atleast i havent heard any complaints about them. i think people are weary since schaller is a german brand that has been used on fenders since the 80's or earlier? and ping is new and basically an exact copy of the schallers. they are basically the same thing but fender has to pay less since they are paying an asian company named ping to manufacture them instead of the german company schaller. i guess schallers patent ran up for them. but ping is a well respected and good company so dont worry.

I've seen the Schaller non- F tuners on ebay, but they are going for more $ than brand new F tuners! Is there a way to tell if the tuners are schallers with F thumscrews, vs Pings?

Both the American Deluxe SSS and American Deluxe HSS list the tuners as
Fender®/Schaller® Deluxe Staggered Cast/Sealed Locking Tuning Machines

And that is what came on my Am Dlx.

The Fender American Standards list the tuners as
Fender® Deluxe Staggered Cast/Sealed Tuning Machines

So they might be Pings but they are still good tuning machines.

I know Fender still lists the tuners as being Schallers, but I'm guessing they just haven't updated their website? From what I've seen, the part # hasn't changed either. I did email Fender, but no response yet...

It would appear that this thread was started on a rumor. Both the Schaller and the Sperzel locking tuners, the Schaller being the better of the two, are reliable tuning machines. Often, when the tension screws at the end of the tuner buttons are not adjusted properly, the tuner will not behave in the manner that they were designed for. Also, the washer that is between the button and the shaft, if damaged, can degrade the performance of the tuning machine.
My American Deluxe Strat HSS uses Schaller locking tuners that are nothing short of great. And the American Deluxe Strats that I have played performed equally well. I also own a '97 Strat Plus that uses the Sperzel tuners; while not as refined, they also very reliable and stable machine heads.

belphedeus, the F tuners are easy to get for $60, where as the non-F have been going $65 to $75 or so.

Sunny Boy, I did start this thread to determine if there was any truth to the rumor that the newer tuners were no longer made by Schaller, and whether or not the quality had suffered as a result. It sounds like they are now made by Ping, but if the design and materials haven't changed, they should be just as good (barring any initial manufacturing issues). It seems these are the only locking tuners available that drop into a stock strat, without drilling new holes......

Now I'm just rambling...I'll have to check them out on a new AmDlx and make my decision from that.

Thanks all!
Pat

In comparison to the link...mine has the 2 pin anchor which are prominent in most fender necks i think...like in the image below..
