I would like to learn how the tone controls effect our frequency response.

For example; Where do I set the knob (0,5,10) to minimize reducing my guitar tone?

Any additional detail would be appreciated.

I have a 2005 American Deluxe w S-1 switch (if this matters?)

Thanks, JohnnyB

Howdy and Welcome!

Keep the tone pot on 10 to keep all the higher frequencies.

As you lower the tone pot (variable resistor) the resistance is reduced allowing the more of higher frequencies to pass to ground through the capacitor.

There are others here who can provide you with a far more detailed explanation as to how tone controls work (I'm crap at explaining this sort of thing!).

Hope this helps... a bit! :D

That was a perfectly big hairy explanation.

I've never seen a frequency analysis of a tone pot in use, so I couldn't tell you the roll off or the knee frequency: it would depend on the value of capacitor and the type of pickup you have. If I had to guess, I'd say it's a first order roll-off (that'd be 6 db per octave).

I hope someone might give more info.

+1

If anyone has the magic touch and can work the forums merciless search function I wouldn't be at all surprised if they find some pretty detailed posts on the subject.

The Forums collective knowledge base never fails to amaze me.

Cheers!

Andy
