where is a good place to go to get information on strings?

with a boatload of different types out there, i wonder how i can get through this without having to spend a weeks' wages

i play mostly 60's, classic rock' and jazz. i want something that gives a nice clean sound that doesn't go "zwoop" as you slide down the strings. is this what coated strings are for?

any info would help

This, I'm afraid is way too subjective an issue for any kind of objective dissertation. For example, I personally feel that the only difference between say a set of Ernie Ball Super Slinkys and a set of .009 D'Addario XLs are the round cores vs. the hex cores with everything else being equal. I guarantee you that others' mileage will vary on this one.

Phreddy, with 2600+ posts you have been around long enough that YOU should be giving string advice to the lesser experienced of us out here like me!

well- thanks for the nice compliments. i have been playing for over 50 years, but i always feel i can learn something new. i have many posts asking about pickups, tube amps, and other things just because there is so much out there that i just can't keep up- almost too many choices.

i guess i am going to stop at my neighborhood store- where i took my first lesson in 1960- and get some advice

The string you should try is the Dean Markley Helix HD strings! The winds on the wound strings are tight and close together minimizing string zwoop drastically!

You could go with flat wound strings. They won't make that noise, but they will burn your fingers when you play.
