i'm down to decisions. a used 1990s fender american 62 strat. overall its in good condition. about grade A to A-. Fret is about 80% left and the only problem is that its just the guitar. no original hardcase, no papers, nothing. just the arm and a similar hardcase. now for the same price i can buy a new 2008 american fender standard stratocaster. which would do you guys think will be the wiser choice?? i cant try out the 2008 strat because its online purchase. i can't really make a decision by feel. so any comments~

a 1990s american 62 reissue is a great buy
however the frets @ 80 % is pretty good.
but if you dont want a used one, you can buy a 2008 am strat.
believe me the concensus is that 2008 is a great guitar.
what you could do is take a picture of it and post it.

here are the pictures of the used 62. the grain IMO doesn't look that great :? are the darker lines on the grain a problem with the wood of the body?? there are a little very small chips on the body but thats all good too~

Hi dingleberry. This is one of those difficult ones that does not have a right or a wrong. Some people say that when you buy a guitar you need to keep in mind future value or investment oppertunities. For me it has always been "which one moves me" Eric Johnson said that the most important thing to him in any instrument is the "vibe". My recommendation would be to choose the one that moves you and has that Vibe that you are looking for. If you choose that one you will not have to worry about resale potential or future value cause you will never sell it anyway.

Many of you will slate me for saying this, but I actually prefer the new standard to the Vintage reissues.. In some ways, I think it's a better axe.

I'm sorry!!!

Ed

thanx for your input carstens. which ever one i purchase, i don't plan on selling it. like you said, its the vibe and the feeling but my main problem is i cannot compare it with the new 2008 model because i have no place to get my hands on it  my main concern with the 62 is the longevity. it will definitely need a lot more care and the hardware's life will be a lot shorter compared to the 2008 model. but i LOVE aged looking guitars. one of my reasons why i'm a bit hesitant on buying the new 2008 models. because of the strong finish. :D

They DO use a thinner undercoat - so theoretically that means it should age quite nicely.. I went for an olympic white, I had black but traded it for white, so glad I did.

i've never seen it in person but from many users online, they say its still strong enough to look good as new within 10years. but who knows~

I'm with carstens on this one. I have rarely purchased a guitar without the oppurtunity to pick it up and play it. It all takes care of itself after that. If I don't have fun with it or feel something in the first few minutes then I'm on to the next one. Collecting and investing are one thing. Long term hapiness and making beautiful music is a whole other deal.

i've tried the 62 and it feels really good and nice~ my only main concern is will the 2008 model sound and feel better (suiting my preference that is) :)

i believe they used poly finishes on the 90's reissues too so really the finish will be about the same, i like the look of that one but it has a crappy peice of rosewwod on it but thats not a big deal. the new standards are a hell of a guitar but the fretwire fender is using now is a joke anyway and will wear out very fast too so dont base your decision on that. thats a tough one?? i like both!!

The '62 looks really clean. I think I'd go that route but that's just me.
