I have an EJ strat, which has a thin-skinned nitrocellulose lacquer, on a guitar stand. I read that a nitro guitar in constant contact with rubber or leather is not good. My guitar stand is padded with foam and I was wondering if this was okay for a nitro finish. If not, what sort of covering is recommended? I would prefer to keep it out of the case if possible.

I've left my nitro finished AVRI 52 Tele on a foam padded stand for a couple of days at a time with no problems, but don't know about long term use. The case is the best place to keep a guitar long term.

It gets played regularly (lets say 4-5 days in the week) which is why I would prefer to leave it out of the case for convenience.

I should mention I live in Hawaii incase that makes a difference, so high humidity and consistent warm temperatures (around 80 degrees year round). I don't know if that makes a difference but I know nitro guitars are sensitive to temperature changes.

If you experience "consistent warm temperatures" then "temperature changes" are negligible and of no concern.

Sorry that was worded poorly, I meant to say, "if high humidity combined with warm temperatures make a difference."

I cannot speak to the foam covered stand but stay away from guitar stands that use surgical rubber tubing for padding. The nitro finish will react with the rubber become soft and tacky eventually rubbing off. I learned that lesson the hard way many years ago.  Here's a link to an article that might help.

I noticed a few weeks after leaving my sunburst strat (Japanese, '68 reissue), on a stand, that two blurry marks were starting to show on the clear finish
I t-cut them out OK and then covered all the contact points on the stand with some black furry material (very similar to what is used in guitar cases) and everything was fine then
I know gibson reccomend no contact with surgical rubber

Some foams and other materials are oil based. They will discolor the guitar if its a light color. I sugges taking old cotton socks or t-shirts and cover the parts that touch the guitar.

There are a number of guitar stands that are advertised as safe for Nitro finishes. Perhaps look into one of those.

It would be helpful to name a few.

I don't have the names handy at the moment. Been a while since I looked some up for a friend. However........I do remember that I got the stands from the Musician's Friend website.

www.musiciansfriend.com

I'm sure browsing the site, should come up with some. I've also seen some at a local guitar center.

Here's some. Says in the description that it's safe for nitro guitars.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessor ... 1000000000

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessor ... 0000000000

Although I don't have a nitro guitar, I have the below one, myself. Great stand, and it can fold into a small bag.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessor ... 9000000000

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessor ... 8000000000

That should get things started. I'm sure there are more out there.

Good luck.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. I'll keep a close eye on it for now with the intent to buy a new stand as well. Maybe I'll cover the foam with a t-shirt or something in the meantime.
