It is selfish to assume that every product Fender puts out needs your seal of approval. Cruise the catalog and look at all of the guitars that are not reliced. Fender makes these instruments because people buy them. If you don't like them, buy one of the 500 models that are not road worn and move on.

This is so good, it has to be quoted.

+1

I don't know how many times this has been a topic. I do wish someone would give me a nickel for every time it was.

It's all a matter of taste, of course.

I love the look of a well loved, well abused guitar (mine and those of others). The "artists" in the Fender Custom Shop can make me think that a brand new guitar has been well loved and well abused. Gibson has its artists too. I guess they are fooling us with their art. Hopefully, the purchasers of those relics will love them and make inspired music with them.

Some guys can do a good DIY relicing job. A lot of guys can't. It's those monstrosities that give relicing a bad name. The MIM Fender Road Worns aren't the greatest examples of relics (they are assembly line products after all), but they are okay for the guys on a budget. If I had one, I might want to try to "personalize" it a bit more so that it didn't look like the next guy's.

I have read that Keith Richards was credited as being the one that really started the whole "Road Worn" thing, maybe long before. He supposedly asked for his new guitars to be "worn-in" for the better feel, as he didn't like the way a brand new guitar felt.

Howdy!

Looks wise, I'm not a fan of the MIM road worn guitars, but I have to say the CS do some proper cool Relic Strats!

Nice. 8)

I can't imagine owning a nice white guitar and then, after many years of service, finding out that there was a pink paisley finish under the white. Was it supposed to have happened for real I wonder? With Fender and the good old days, just about everything was possible.

Now I think about it that would be a shocker!

I'm sure I've read somewhere here that there were a whole bunch of Paisley Strats that got a re-fin. I kind of get the impression that the CS wouldn't fabricate a relic with out first having a prime example to work from first.

I agree that this is a subject that's been beat to death, here and elsewhere.

I'll add, though, that while I truly love the relic'd or road worn look, and I especially love the feel of the necks, I can understand why others don't like them. I've returned a MIA Std Strat for a very small cosmetic flaw, so I completely understand why some don't want to spend serious coin on a guitar that was intentionally built to have cosmetic flaws. On the other hand, my dream guitar is a '57 heavy relic 2T sunburst/maple, so what do I know.

Guitars, like favorite musicians, are personal preferences, and FMIC has enough models in their lineup to appeal to most everyone. Plus it's nice to know that since so many players seem to have a love it/hate it opinion of road worns/relics, there should be plenty of the heavy relic'd '57s available when I finally win the lottery. (Now if could only remember to actually PLAY the lottery occasionally I'd be on my way).
