Other than the Custom Shop 50th Anniversary plastic, there aren't any really accurate short skirt knobs or football tips. There have been some decent short skirt knobs from Japan -- some details were wrong but they were pretty much the right shape. I've never seen a good football tip other than the CS's.

That's why they're expensive -- they're almost unattainable.

For those that don't know, the earliest Strat plastic parts were made of polystyrene (modern parts are vinyl), and there were subtle differences in shape & proportions.

Vintage football tip:

Modern switch tip:

The original tip had a bulging ellipsoid shape, the modern tip is conical. You'd have to add material to the modern shape to recreate the original football. (You can sand down a modern tip and make a smaller version of the football, but if you're obsessed enough to notice the football shape you'll also notice that it's too small.)

Hi masterofinsanity: replica '50s styrene parts are available - and as you say they are wa-a-a-a-a-a-ay too expensive! Scroll down this page for some possibilities, but you may want to make sure your defribrillator is charged and ready to go before you do, because heart failure is a distinct possibility when you see the prices:

http://www.montreuxguitars.com/products ... chine.html

$150 for three knobs and a switch tip??? Shazam: we're in the wrong business!

Where I live in the UK, as well as those Time Machine knobs WDMusic also sell RetroVibe relic parts. They are still wildly expensive, but less so (down the page):

http://www.wdmusic.co.uk/category/Relic ... ?limit=200

£32 for their '56 knob set works out about $50. That's still obscene, but merely a third as obscene as the Time Machine ones. Unfortunately, as far as I can see RetroVibe don't do a '54 spec short skirt knob. Also, unless I'm seeing it wrong, wdmusic.com in the US don't offer either Time Machine or RetroVibe parts; I don't know why not. But then if people are paying that much for some knobs I guess postage from the UK really won't upset them too much...

Personally, I think I can put up with the modern plastic parts on my reissue Strats!

Good luck - C

$150 Crikey!

I'm not fussed about the knobs but the Switch Tip is by far the coolest thing I've seen all week!!! Ok, so I may not have had the best week ever but its still undeniably cool. 8)

After attempting to make my own switch tip...

...and deciding the job was a complete nightmare to do, It suddenly seems financially viable to have a go at a Vintage "egg" style tip...

One for the list me thinks.

for the switch tip you could add some bondo or something of that nature and use some sand paper or files just something to shape it then paint it white. it shouldnt be that hard.

Master, I completely agree with you. There are so-o-o-o-o many after-market plastic knobs out there in all shades and styles. So it seems amazing that someone somewhere isn't doing a sensibly priced short skirt knob set along with that nice egg-shaped switch tip in affordable plastic.

A little corner of the market waiting to be filled...

Cheers - C
