Such a simple piece of wood to have painted. Off white with a deep pearl would be lovely i think...

My 88 Strat i just found when i replaced the PUP's was blue and has been sprayed red with a metallic near a pink in some lights..... Unless the blue was fender undercoat? I don't know....But it's a pretty guitar anyways....

I have a hard time finding cool colors as well as far as today's Fenders go. There isn't a lot of choice. I try and buy a different color each time I buy a guitar. If the guitar is cheap enough I'll buy whatever the color is and not be picky which is how I ended up w/ a 2005 MIM Fender HSS strat in Graffiti Yellow w/ matching yellow headstock for $120 a couple of days ago.. Pickguard and knobs are getting switched to white for the "classic look". :)

Boring is not what I would describe Fender's Stratocaster line up. scrolling up the page and looking at the new models and the new Fender Magazine should point out that various finishes in various colds are available....

That being said, you cannot expect a shop to stock multiple color versions of each model solely because a 1% of Strat buyers want a particular color...That inventory would not move out the door..If you want something special than you are going to have to special order it, either thru the Custom Shop or as a surcharge to the Standard Model.....( if possible )

one the note of CS being a bit pricey for just a choice of different colors...

keep in mind that you also get that guitar built how you want it with the best wood (since the custom shop gets first pick - then it's the US production floor and Mexico typically gets the left overs). Besides the wood there is also your choice of pickups and electronics as well as other hardware. The color is just the icing on the cake.

Actually the Custom Shop doesn't really get first pick...They order the baulks they want select the ones that will meet the AA or AAAcriteria, then the ones not wanted are sent to other Fender production models or are held because someone may have an order wanting a very clean looking neck...Here is a case in point of a MIM Del. Tele Neck...

This neck is more figured than My CS 56 NOS Strat, so it isn't always the case that MIM's don't get choice wood, I actually have two Squier Necks that also have nice figuring...
Throughout the whole range Fender does pay attention to the quality,it's just that from the CS on down it's a selection process that is narrow at the CS and less as the lines decrease in pricing..

+1 I agree, dump the black pickguard and plastic!

Who-eee! Now if I could only stumble onto something like that - what a sweet color!

I'm not totally adverse to the blackout look, though.

There's so many cool colors out there!!

Graffity Yellow! :D :D :D
Sunset metallic! :D :D :D
Cherry burst!! :D :D :D
Daphne Blue!! :D :D :D
Gold Sparkle (oh well  )
Surf Pearl!! :D :D :D :D :D

Image

Candy Cola!! :D :D (not as boring standard as Candy Apple Red)

I've seen stunning Midnight Wine (wine red but I don't know if that was original)

The Mexico-factory came out with a "splatter" Strat, a kinda color-spin-finish:

These are all factory finishes, no custom finishes! (except the midnight wine, maybe)

Of course you can as well paint your guitar yourself, like I did with my first Strat (no original Fender).

(Pickups were still missing on this pic)

Unfortunately this guitar died in the desert of Ethiopia with a broken neck. I gave it to an African friend of mine as a gift. This was Mother of Pearl, a metallic flip/flop finish with blue airbrush tribals:
