I was making my local rounds of pawnshops today. I ran into what the owner told me was an eric clapton strat. I don't believe everything I hear. On the back of the neck the seial # began with 09 It also said special edition on back opf the neck. Also had a 8 hole pickguard. White with rosewood neck, can anyone help in identifuong whether or not it is an eric clapton model ? He told me I could have it for 650.00.

Was there no Alpha(A-Z) before the 09? Was it MiM, MiA MiJ? I've looked at product dating, the link is above in Support and it looks like 10,11 & 12 are the only serials to start with number and not a letter. If you can't find it here, try Squire-Talk many have, Fender Strats as well as Fender Squires. Though all the Squire Strats start with a Letter.
Or better yet take a pic with camera of the head stock on both sides and post it. You'll probably get a better answer. Better to be suspicious than to pay that price for a clone. Especially when this Strat retails at Fender for 2100.00.
Good Luck J.

Clapton's are maple boards not rosewood. they have a V neck and a 9v battery in the back. Also Clapton's sig should be on the headstock. So the fact it is rosewood means no.

EC Strats feature a maple neck with 22 vintage frets and BiFlex truss-rod (excepting the CS versions, teambuilt and masterbuilt). Also, they sport either Gold Lace Sensors or Vintage Noiseless pickups with active mid-boost and TBX circuits (CS Masterbuilts doesn't have the TBX pot anyway), as well as a blocked vintage tremolo bridge.

The CS had built a batch of EC Strats with rosewood necks in 1991. Only 94 examples were made, Eric was seen playing one of those (finished in candy green) during a gig at Dallas in April 25, 1990.

There are exceptions, the 10th Anniversary Antigua Strat and Crash 3 feature 3-ply 11-hole guards.

There are a lot of great tips here. Some very obvious things that point to a Clapton Strat is this:

1) Eric Clapton signature should be on the headstock 2) Vintage 6 screw bridge 3) Soft V shaped neck 4) 22 frets on a Maple neck 5) Serial number starts with s SNxxxx or SZxxxxxx. 6) 9 volt battery route under back tremolo cover. 7) Pre-2001 should have Lace Sensor Pickups and after 2001 Fender Noiseless. 8 ) Vintage tuners and 9 ) 6 hole, 1-ply pickguard.

CNxxxx and CZxxxx for the Custom Artist versions. This was done until late 2007.

As of 2008 serial numbers have been changed a bit. Fender uses now the US digits for their American-made instruments.

Thanks for pointing that out Mr. Chrome. I am not really versed in late 2000ish Fenders. My area of knowledge, how be it limited, is 1980s- 1990s Strats and Teles.

Xhefri - actually Chrome's off by two years. Fender serial numbers changed in 2010 after they used up all the Z9 (and DZ and SZ9) decals. For about February through maybe April 2010 the USA guitars that formerly used the Z9s they had serial numbers that simply started with a "10" - and the font of the "10" wasn't too far off the font of the other 6 digits (the actual serial number). By about April 2010 these USA guitars were now shipping with serial numbers that started with a bold font "US10" - so the "US10" part stood out from the other 6 digits. Also Fender stopped using the "D" for the American Deluxes and the "S" for USA-built Artist Signatures - these now just have the same serial numbers as the American Standards, American Specials, and Highway 1s. Then the "US11" numbers came in about March of 2011, and we are just now starting to see some "US12" numbers coming out.

Since the MIM guitars change over mid-year, they went straight from their "MZ9" (and "MSZ9" for the MIM Artist Signatures) to using serial numbers that start with "MX10" in July 2010 or so (and "MX11" numbers in July of last year, etc.).

Fender really needs to update their serial number page with the new system.

I went buy there again today and he jacked the price up on me. The serial number on the back reads n097998795 also on back of the neck it reads special edition with a star below it. It is white with american vintage tremelo rosewodd fret board and 8 hole pickguard.
