I have a question for you. I purchased a 2008 American Standard Strat on Saturday, Olympic White with Rosewood fret board. Awesome guitar. Everything on this guitar was well set-up, the bridge floats at about 1/8 off the top and the saddle heights are perfect, the action is spot on. Everything is set up exactly how I want it. HOWEVER, when I brought it home and was finally able to screw in the tremolo, the bar wouldn’t set down quite as low as I like it. It's actually very high! Once the trem is in as far as I can turn it, the tip of the tremolo’s distance to the body/pickguard is 2.5” . That is, I measured from the tip of the tremolo arm to the pickguard and it’s way too high. And the arch of the tremolo turns at 1”, again very high compared to my other Strats (2” and .5” respectively). I thought perhaps there was a way to adjust the tension where the tremolo can go further in?

You 2008 owners notice this as well, or do I have a lemon?

Thank you all!!

Yes, that's a total lemon. You should send it to me immediately.

If it bothers you take the bar back to the music store and see if they have a shorter one, maybe even another brand. Especially if the store does onsite repairs, they may have a bin of used parts and miscellaneous pieces. I did this to an old Aria I had. Worked great.

I had this problem and found out I did not have the little spring in there. Seems the tape was removed and so was the spring before I bought it.

Check to see if you have this little spring where the Tremelo arm screws into.

I ordered a package of replacement springs and once I installed one the arm was able to screw in farther then before.

Thanks Guys: Gamera, that is a very good idea. I will asl them if they have anything. I may need to modify the bar.

Thank you Tom. I do have the spring, luck for me it fell righ into the case. But wouldn't the spring just create even more tension? I will give that a try, but I will be amazed if it works becuase as it is, it's very tight when i screw the bar in, no un intended of coarse.

Thanks guys, and if anyone else has any expereince with this, please chime in. I just can't believe people would actually like the bar that high, if the spring thing doesn't work.

AnthonyMX,

No, the spring will actually allow the tremelo arm to be screwed in even further. I do not know how it exactly works but without the spring I could still see threads on the Tremelo arm after screwing it into the bridge. I had to stop because is was getting tough.

After installing the spring I was able to screw the Tremelo Arm in even further so no threads show.

As I said, I do not know how the spring allows this but it does.

When I bought my `08 Strat I was told that little spring is a spacer for the tremelo arm. But your right about the height of the arm, mine is high too. The block under the bridge had to be replaced also, right out of the box there was a defect. The hole for the whammy bar was drilled at a bad angle and the holes in the bridge and block didn`t line up and the bar wouldn`t screw in. That issue was resolved, but when I use the bar it feels like it`s too far away.

Hi Tom:

Thanks again for your feedback. I did try the spring last night, however, it did not work out. It didn't affect things either way, so perhaps it's not reaching all the way down. As someone else suggested, I will probably purchase a replacement arm to modify at the height I like.

JDP: Thank you as well. Now I know I'm not going crazy! I did notice on mine that the holes on the block and bridge were not quite lined up either. But the salesman replaced the strings with a higher guage which is making the bridge tilt further than it should. I was waiting to adjust the claws before really looking into it. Thanks again for your reply.

Thanks guys!!
