I just recently purchased an American Deluxe Strat with locking tuners. At the music store, I was told that a light coat of grease should be placed on the shaft of the "String locking button" (the thumbscrew thingie that tightens down on the string-backside of tuner), about every six months. He went on to tell me that the tuners would go bad, if this was not done. So far I don't see where any grease might go, and do any good. At another music shop, a salesman there, told me that he was an owner of an American Deluxe Strat, and that putting grease in this area was not necessary (He never heard of such a thing). I checked the owners manual that came with the guitar, and it makes no mention of any maintenance required for the locking tuners.

Does anyone have any information about putting lubricants on the locking tuners?

Thanks.

I've never heard of this before either (and I've owned a couple Fenders with the locking tuners). Maybe the first guy meant 'loctite'. ;) (Ignore that - you don't want to do that for sure).

Let's see if there is an official response.

I have not heard of this either.

If you want an "official" response try emailing Fender at: consumerrelations@fender.com

Sounds like it's just something he does for his own entertainment, despite what's really suppose to be done, which is *NOTHING*.

I say keep grease and anything like it away from your tuners.

Word of advice about guitar salesman: "Ignore them."

Thanks a lot for the help. It didn't seem right to me that you needed to put on a light grease on the locking tuners. Especially when I looked at the thumb tighteners......no place to put it. I surely didn't want to try the grease without knowing for sure. I'll just leave things be. As the saying goes......"if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

And....no. The salesperson wasn't wearing a dress. If so, I might've bought a couple of more guitars.
