Hey Guys,
Now I've had my Strat now for a few months now and reckoned it was time to give it the full set up, right from neck to pups.
Now this is the first time I have had the pick guard off and find...... A Hole!!
Whats that?
Is it a pot/coke stash for hard core muso's???? lol
Not too worried just wondered why it's there.

I've seen that on Mexican and Squier bodies. Not exactly sure but I thought they might be either for machine handling reasons, finishing reasons or for installing a toggle switch, while for the latter a cable route would be missing.

Never bothered me much, so I didn't do any research.

I've seen up to three of them on different bodies.

They're simply there and don't hurt me, don't scream at me, don't insult me and don't hit me.

Maybe somebody else has more insight in this topic?

It's where the vibes live.

...Alternatively, back in the early days of this website we've been told on this very Forum by a Fender machinist from the factory that those holes in body and neck pocket are for positioning the timber on the CNC machine. Which is a less appealing but more accurate explanation.

Cheers - C

Fill the hole with brass or lead to increase the weight and hence increase the sustain and improve the tone.

Thank you, Ceri, that makes sense. That's what I meant with "machine handling", I just couldn't think of the proper terms in English.
I assumed it must be something useful for either routing, cutting or finishing in terms of position or stability on some sort of fixing mechanism.

Thanx for clearing this up! :)

I have seen different holes in all types of strats, from none to 3 holes.
I wondered the same, I thought maybe to ID the different models in the parts bin.
it's a mystery to me. I guess this is a question for the factory to answer.

also I was thinking, since they used multiple types of woods on their bodies,
not everybody can ID wood types, so to make it easy, they used a hole system.
1 hole for ash, 2 holes for another and so on.... just guessing....lol

If it hasn't been said yet; it's part of the manufacturing process. Completely normal.

If for nothing else, it is a prime conversation piece.

We ought to start an, "Infallible Web Dogma" thread explaining the 'real' reason for those holes being there.

As a matter of fact, I was convinced that they were there for giving the guitar bodies semi-acoustic properties until I sighted the spirit of Elvis in K-Mart this Friday past. He mentally imparted to me that SRV had just told him the real reason: When painting the guitar, one uses their finger in there for spinning the body around so that when the color is sprayed onto the guitar bodies, the paint would go on evenly. So if Elvis and SRV said it, it must be true, end of story, and this is absolutely, positively what they are there for; I was wrong, case closed!

My 07 MIM strat has three holes. its a sunburst if that makes a difference but I also noticed the holes are different depths. It was made in Mexico so I have to wonder what they smuggled across the border in those holes.
