I figure that this deserves to be a topic in it's own. What styles of music are best suited for the different types of necks (C, V, U)? The general response will probably be "whatever feels right to you" but I haven't felt any of them. My first guitar was a wal-mart first act. I played it 2 years and switched to an ibanez artcore am-73, which I have been playing since I graduated high school (4 years ago). I play hard rock and metal rythmn, but I have a much bluesier lead style. What neck style would you fender savvy people reccommend with my background?

TBH I haven't tried a U neck. But between the V and the C I like the C. It's more comfortable to me when I barre chord.

it depends on how big your hands are really. if you have big hands, and you get a thin neck, you will be able to play fast, but your hand will get tired quicker. you need to find a good middle ground for your hands. I prefer the soft V shape necks, like on the Clapton strat. It still plays great, but its got a little more wood right in the center of the neck to be able to rest your hand on.

you really need to go out and try out some guitars though, to figure out what you like.

Sounds like I might have to do that. Do you consider your hands big or small, since you like the soft V? I don't think I have big or small hands. Probably very medium. I'm just terrified to ask the guy who works at the store to let me play the high$$ guitars behind the counter. They can be jerks sometimes.

my hands are kinda big. not the largest I have seen, but they are big. mostly, my fingers are really long, so I need some extra wood on the neck, especially when I am playing on the high e and b strings.

yeah, sometimes guys at music stores can be fucks. If you are nervous about playing on some high priced guitars, try out the lower end ones first. just try and play on as many guitars as you can, in all different price ranges. and don't think that just because a guitar is expensive, it will play better than a low end. I played a 4000$ PRS the other day, and it played like $@!& compared to my MIM strat.

Just ask if you can play on the guitar, even if it is expensive. just take care not to beat on the guitar too much in the shop. I mean, the point of having guitars in the store is so customers can try them out, so just ask, and if they are fucks, ask the manager.

I appreciate the imput. I figured I'd post the poll results so far since I'm not sure if everyone else can see. It's 10 C, 2 V, and 2 U, but it is sounding like it's more of the hand shape and size that fits the guitar than one type of guitar is fit for one type of music.

yeah, for the best results, you gotta let the guitar pick you, not the other way around. you gotta find which guitar plays and sounds best in your hands, not just what your favorite players are using.

hell, out of all the metal bands in my hometown, I was the only one playing on a surf green strat. It played way better than any of the Les Pauls, Jacksons, or any other that I played. looked a little different, but sounded fantastic.

I have smallish hands so I found the C to best suit me.

I'm not sure. I played a kid's american strat from Aynor, SC in high school and loved it. I don't have anymore contact with him. That's the only fender I've played. I don't think I have a really big left hand though. I will have to call around to see who has strats in stock. The stores around here have low end guitars. The only place I've been that had high end guitars was Andy Owings in Myrtle Beach. They tick me off every time I go in there though.

I went to get my jack fixed for my ibanez and I had the strings off with the plan of buying new ones. The guy sassed me and told me it would be nice to be able to test it once I get it fixed. I joked and said you can play a radio through those pickups their so hot. And he said I ain't got no radio so I slammed the case shut and said I'll do it myself and did.

I've got a soft V on my Clapton Blackie, a U on my '52 Tele & a large C
on my hot rod '62. All are different, but all are comfortable. Clapton likes
the soft V because he feels that the flats of the V give him a better surface
for his thumb when he stretches strings. It's nice, but I don't have any
problem with the other two shapes & I think they both fit my hand better
than the V does. I guess the answer is "You gotta try them all!!!". Go to
the music store and play them all & go back a couple of times so you
really get to feel the differences & I'm sure one will speak to you.

Good luck,

Oldguy

I just bought a strat with a V neck. Just curious to see if there are any soft V players that don't have big hands? My hands are on the small side but I don't find it too akward playing with my 12 string acoustic (which most definately does have a fat neck!) so I'm assuming I'll enjoy the V neck also.

I got smallish hands but like big necks and high action.
Plays and sounds better to me.
My Baja Tele's got a real nice neck with a soft V.
