These are my three girls.

Fender Stratocaster Hot Rod Reissues (aka HRR)

These are MIJs from the early 90's. Closest relatives are the MIA Floyd Rose Classic Stratocaster and the MIJ Floyd Rose Squier Series. They are commonly mistaken for partscasters because the neck is stamped "Made in Japan" and the neck plate is stamped "Fender USA", but they were manufactured this way. The neck is a thinner Charvel style neck, the Original Floyd Rose is German, the neck heel is beveled like a deluxe strat. TBX control and coil split. The stock humbucker on these is a Dimarzio H2, which is a Super 3 equivalent. I wanted a little variety, so I switched out the humbucker in the tabacco fotoflame strat for a Dimarzio JB. I love the way harmonics jump out of a JB. I also switched out the humbucker in my Crimson Fotoflame strat to a Dimarzio H8, which is supposed to be the equivalent of a PAF Pro. The H8 is the stock humbucker on the MIA Floyd Rose Classic Stratocaster. Which is cool, because I was able to customize the guitar, without it looking like a customized guitar, being that the Dimarzio H2 and H8 look identical.

Cool. I loved those Fotoflames back in the early 90s. Nearly bought one myself way back when.

LOVE; LOVE; LOVE!!!

Very nice guitars.
I'm still working on getting my own Floyd Rose equipped strat. Mine are all S/S/S (I sold the one with the HBs two days ago and that one also had no FR).

Until now I've been playing my Ibanez guitars if I wanted to use a FR.

I picked up a used one in 93 - fell in love. A great workhorse over the years.

I always thought the MIJ on the neck with the Fender USA nameplate was amusing.
A guy once accused me of modifying a vintage guitar when he saw the headstock.

Question:
I've never owned a Floyd equipped Strat......Do you lose much bass response due to the extra chunk of wood taken out of the bridge section to accomodate the Floyd?
Does the guitar sound 'thin' as compared to a standard tremolo HSS formatted Strat?

The HRR models became the basis for the Richie Sambora signatures with the huge MOP stars and the MDX mid-boost circuit. They were also the precursors to the USA Floyd Rose Classics/Specials.

I recalled the CS making a HRR50 for Richie himself, though these guitars were Japanese-made.

IMHO:

- It depends on more than the Floyd...body wood type factors in, type/style/output/tonal range of the pickups you have in it, the electronics/pots, fretboard wood, etc.

- I always add a "Big Brass Block" Upgrade to every Floyd Equipped Guitar, no matter what, which really makes a difference.

I have had Floyd Equipped Guitars that sounded thin, but that was usually due to cheap stock components on lower grade guitars. I do know that the word "THIN" is absolutely not in the description of the tone of my 1989 Custom Shop Floyd Stratocaster, 1988 B.C. Rich Gunslinger/Assassin "Graffiti" or 1989/90 Kramer Telecaster Custom.

Hello. I'm looking to pick this Squier Series Floyd Rose Strat. I'm gonna get it regardless because they only want $200 for it from. (I'm poor and a noob, I think they feel bad for me.) But I was wondering if anyone knew anything about S serial numbers. It's marked MIJ S031628. All I've found referance to online begin with N. Any insight from the experts?

Sounds like you are talking about one of these.

Image

They were made in the mid 90s, which coincides with the S serial number and they have a "Squier Series" decal on the headstock. I've mostly seen them in crimson, honey or blue fotoflame finishes, but I have seen them in black or white. I believe Fender strated making these Squiers in Japan when they discontinued the HRR line. I've never played one, but I've heard they are excellent quality. $200 sounds like a excellent buy, depending on the condition.
