If you state that the distance (once again, the batteries are "non coupable") of the pickups to the strings might be a reason, would it make sense to raise the Roland-pickup? Or rather lower the single-coils?

I've measured the Roland VG pickup to have a gap of 2/32" (1/16") between strings (unfretted) and top of pickup.

My single-coil pickups have a gap from the low-E to the high-E of 7/32" to 5/32". The middle pickup is slightly lower at 8/32" to 7/32" gap. Measurements here are from the pickup cover - not the poles.

It is also imaginable that a lesser neck bow or greater neck angle will decrease the string height causing the strings to be closer to the single-coil pickups and requiring the VG pickup to be lowered due to the angle at which the strings enter the bridge. As with all guitars, nut height, bridge height, and numerous minor adjustables could affect guitar performance.

My bandmate has a VG and we've played with it a lot. The virtual settings are a wee bit less in volume, but not much. Frankly, we never play it in its natural setting. Why have a VG if you are going to do that! Anyway, I was thinking about your amp. You mentioned it was a home amp. If its very underpowered, I wonder if the negligible difference in volume is exaserbated by a little amp. We play the VG through a Marshall Blues Breaker and I don't hear a drop in volume at gig levels. Just a thought. If this bothers you, you should return it or have someone look at it.

So my question has to do with how far the Roland Pickup is supposed to be from the strings? Can that pickup be real close - like so close it's just not hitting the strings or does it need to be backed off a bit if so how far?

Thanks in advance for the info.

According to the Roland GK-3 divided-pickup manual:

The pickup height should be adjusted so that the
distance between the pickup and the strings is about
1.0 mm (0.04") when the highest frets on the first
and sixth strings are fingered.

That's about what I measure for the VG pickup when fretting the highest frets as instructed.

Robert,

Thanks for digging that Roland pickup height stat out. I'll double check how mine is set. FWIW, IMHO - I find that the VG Strat to be a great tool in the cover band I play in - in the live band mix it sounds great - if we are going to do several songs that need an acoustic guitar, I bring an acoustic amp and use an A/B switch. Once the VG acoustic setting is run through a dedicated acoustic amp it really helps to bring the sound to life - for one or two acoustic rhythm-strum songs, running it through the regular guitar amp seems to get us through the song just fine.

Thank you so much, Robert!

That simple information did it - my Roland pickup had a distance about 5mm instead of one. Guess that explaines everything... you just have to know, where to look. Now it naturally seems quite obvious to me, but mine being the only VG I ever had in my hands...

Now everything's just as it should be, perfectly balanced..

(Why doesn't Fender provide this information, by the way? Don't understand that - I've heard of quite a lot of people with the same problem, by now. Seems the pickups aren't always properly adjusted by factory, the more important the information for the users seems to be!!!)

Thanks again to Robert,

all the best to you all from Switzerland,

Jakob

I will try to change the height of the Roland pick-up also, als mine is about 3-4 mm from the strings.

Thanks fot the idea, will let you know if it solves my problem too.
