in the 80's we use say all the high hung players looked like they are
wearing their guitar's as a necklace vs dragging the ground.
but for me the bottom of the rear contour is on my hip.
it does take some adjusting from learning a song sitting in my lap to standing and playing.

I just spent the last two weeks slowly adjusting all my straps up until I got the guitars where I play the best. The top of the contour fits right under my lower rib. My straps are all set at 46". It's a little high for looking cool, but I've seen pictures of Bloomfield with his guitar up like mine, so that made me feel better.

I have to say - I think he looks VERY comfortable with his guitar where it is. I wear mine a little lower than that, but a lot higher than I did 40 years ago (my mom made my first guitar strap for me).

I set my strap to hold my guitar in the same place whether I am standing or sitting. It is too high to be cool but I can transition from practicing sitting down to standing up without missing a beat, quite literally.

The center of the guitar body is at my hip bone. It's slightly lower compared to play while sitting. Well, I hardly play while sitting at all anymore, I pretty much stand all the time while playing.

It doesn't matter how it looks, it must feel comfortable.

It would be way cooler to have long hair than having my axe at my knees!

After 15 surgeries on both hands and my right elbow and right shoulder I have to hang the guitar higher than I used to. I'm just happy I can still play.

I've had many band mates over the years actually complain about how comparatively high I hang the guitar. I even argued the point that many of the better guitarists out there hang their guitars high by choice. Yet, the vast majority of my critics still seemed genuinely annoyed. Evidently, such things are clearly a classic case of, "It is better to look good than to feel good." YMMV.

Danny Gatton and Roy Buchanan, just to mention two of the greatest ever guitar players who all played with their guitar in the higher position. Technique and ease of playing is greatly improved as is comfort and not to mention keeping you free from injuries.

I tend to see the lower a player wears his guitar to mean the less serious he is about playing well and it's more about the image factor. There are exceptions obviously, Jimmy Page comes to mind; how he could play like that is beyond me!

Advice that i heard decades ago is that the guitar should be in the same position standing up as it would be if you're sitting down playing.

That pic of Sonny Landreth shows the benefits of a higher position; everything's right there within easy reach, no body contortions required to reach certain area's on the neck.

Man i would tell your bandmates to shut it. I would say "you've got more than enough to worry about with your own performance without worrying about where i position my guitar!"

What's "cool" is how good the music sounds coming from your instrument. I'm in agreement with Martian.... the hang should be where ever it feels comfortable to YOU.

Hey, Martian, are we twins?
I, too, broke the wrist on my fretting hand when I was a teen.
I have the strap set to where the guitar is in the same position whether sitting or standing.
Sometimes, I am sitting on the couch watching tv while I play, but get the urge to stand
up and jump around. :D
I am not sure whether you would call my guitar high or not because I am a little fellow.
It looks high, but it is about about near my stomach.

Although I'm certainly not small in stature, yours is a classic example of great minds thinking alike! :D :D :D
