Hey there,

I've never replaced any Pickups or Hums, so i'm not really in to this.

But the Noisless Pickups on my American Deluxe are not my style, so i'm wondering if it is possible to replace them with Texas Special Pickups without losing the S1 switching system.

And if i do it myself is it much more difficult than replacing normal pickups on a start?

Cheers and thanks for the help!

Yes, you can.

Here's the wiring diagram:

Good luck.

Note that the wiring diagram referenced by bluesky636 is for the 2004 model Deluxe. Wiring changed in 2010 and the new wiring diagram is not at the Fender Support site. You can request the 2010 wiring /service diagram from Fender Customer Service.

The thread title is "Replace SCN with Texas Special Pickups". The link I posted is correct for a guitar with SCNs. 2010 Deluxes switched to N3s which are not SCNs though they are still three wires. I doubt there is any significant difference in the wiring.

Take a picture or make a sketch of the wiring.

you can replace the SNC with any pickup you wanted to and still retain the S1 switching system. doesn't matter if they are Texas Specials or EMG's. Wire it up correctly and it will work the same as the SCN's but with whatever tonal difference your pickup of choice offers.

All the S1 does is change what pickups are selected in the different positions of the pickup selector switch and the way they are wired (series or parallel).

Are EMGs fully compatible with the S1 switch?

I don't see why not, all you are doing is changing which pickups are selected in the 5 way switch and some of the pickups are in series instead of in parallel when the switch is in the ON position.

I guess it would depend on where the battery comes into the circuit and if the pickups being in series or parallel would affect the operation of the active circuitry in a way that would damage it.

I would say, research it to be sure, but I would say there would have to be a way to do it.

If the S1 works fine with the TBX and MDX boosts, then it might work fine with the EXG and SPC circuits as well.

However there's no wiring diagram for the EMGs with S1 switch, though I think the best solution is to send an e-mail to EMG for further detailed information concerning the S1.

Why are we talking about EMGs? The OP asked about swapping SCNs for Texas Specials.

Swapping SCNs for Texas Specials.

The SCNs are already installed on his guitar.

Yes, he did, but the OP did not ask about EMGs. Why confuse the OP with unnecessary information?

I typed it backwards. Shoot me. I have corrected my post. In my initial post I provided a link to the wiring diagram of the OP's guitar which has SCNs.

Howdy and Welcome to the Forum!

Swapping out pickups with the S-1 switching system can be pretty scary if its your first time wiring a Strat. Here's a copy of the Fender Diagram Bill posted but I've changed it to show a set of standard two wire pickups (your Texas Specials will work too).

Now you know what's hiding under the hood of your Dlx Strat. I'd recommend taking your guitar to a competent Guitar Tech to carry out the work for you. :D

Hope this helps!

Andy
