OK. I just picked up a sunburst MIJ 1987 Squier with a maple neck today. It's a nice guitar. Love the neck. It's been modified a bit. The bridge has been replaced as has the pickups and the crappy nut lock was removed. The pickups are staggered pole alnicos. Here's my question. When I put the selector in the 2nd and 4th positions, the volume drops considerably. Could it be that they are not reverse wound pickups? I've never used them so I wouldn't know how they react in those positions. The tone is unbelievable in the 1st, 3rd, and 5th positions. It's truly an amazing guitar. I know some of you will pull the "It's just a Squier" but this is THE guitar I've been searching for. I just need to find out if this is just a switch problem or if it's just the type of pickups. I asked the guy I got it from about the pickups, but he really had no idea. He buys and sells guitars constantly and hadn't had it very long. All he knew was what was replaced. If you have any ideas, I'd appreciate any help. I have not taken the guitar apart or anything, but I do know that the body, neck, and tuners are original. Considering that I would have changed out the bridge and the electronics anyways, this was ideal.

I had a similar issue with my PRS but it is a 3 way toggle and the neck pup had a real low volume compared to the bridge hmbkr, when I cracked it open could not see anything wrong until I resoldered all the connections and the last pup connection I went disassemble to resolder and it popped off like a brittle rotted twig,so Yours maybe a bad connection or soldering job if they are after market pups?

Thanks man. I opened her up and seems that the middle pup's wires were backwards. Changed the placement of the wires and bingo! It sounds like it should now.....perfect. Now if I could figure out what pickups are in this thing. 016730 is the serial numbers on each one. Guess I need to start looking those up. Thanks for the input! I'm in love with this guitar!!!! Just wow!

Pretty sure I figured out the pickups question too. Think they are Alnico V staggered from an American Standard. Hope I didnt waste anyone's time! Thanks again!

016730 just indicates that the PUs were made by fender. I've only seen them in Japan and USA strats so far (I stand to be corrected here). I'd say they've put in the PUs from one of those higher quality Fender Japan or Fender USA Strats to replace the weak Squier PUs.

It's a standard PU-number they use, you can't tell which PU model it is by this number.
