I'm new here, and enjoy reading all the posts! Learning a lot from you guys!

I have been a rhythm guitar player since the late 70's, in various bands and recording projects, etc., and have had numerous guitars, mostly Gretsches, Guilds, Epiphones and Fenders. But I quit playing Fenders over 20 years ago...nothing against them, it just sorta happened that way. (I have had my '64 Tennessean for over 30 years.)

Anyway, I just bought a very lightly barely used MIM Deluxe Player Strat (sunburst, rosewood neck, gold-plated hardware...its an '06 or '07, I believe) and I love it! Been reading a lot about all things Strat, and playing a few more Strats in the stores. I actually LIKE the Vintage Noiseless pups and the push-button switch for having the bridge pup on with the neck pup, or with the neck and middle pups.

HOWEVER...in playing a few new guitars at GC, I played an American Strat with stock pups...but the lower tone control adjusts the tone for both the bridge AND middle pups! I LOVE that!! (MY guitar has no tone control for the bridge pup.) Is that a simple wiring addition that I can do on MY guitar???
I really like that feature, and if I could add that to MY guitar, it would have ALL the tonal flexibility I would ever need....for now anyway! :D

Thanks,
--Steve

Congrats Steve on your new aquisition and welcome to the forum. You should be able to modify your existing tone control to work on the bridge and middle pickup by adding a jumper wire on the 5 way switch, but I am not familiar with the wiring diagram on the deluxe player's edition. There is normally an empty contact on the 5 way switch next to the contact going to the 2nd tone control. Just add a jumper between these two contacts and that pot will control both pickups...Below is a link to Premier guitar that will show you how. :)

Hi MrMajstyk,

Great guitar! I had a 2007 in Honey Blonde. Unfortunately, this model has the push-button that uses half of the pup selector switch, and the tone controls are connected directly to the pup wires. So, a rewire is necessary to get tone control on all three pups, not too difficult. Just wire as a standard wiring, then add the push-button to connect the bridge pup (Fender should have done this, their way is too complicated for no good reason). I remember that there is a thread about this including a new wiring diagram, not too long ago. I can't find the thread, hopefully someone else remembers it and provide the link (or just post the wiring diagram). You could move one tone control wire from the mid to the bridge pup, but need to rewire to have tone control on all three pups. In this case, a jumper can't be used without a rewire, as it would jumper two pups together.

 Yeah, IIRC it seemed strange for it to be wired this way, and appeared to me that it might require a super-switch to get tone control for all three pups, since one side of the 5-way switch was used for the push-button. Another member, (Andybighair or Martian?), pointed out that it was as simple as rewiring to a standard Strat configuration, jumper the tone control wire, then add the push-button wire to the switch connection going to the vol pot. I thought that there was also an excellent wiring diagram provided, specifically addressing this guitar and tone setup. Still looking back through old posts, those guys make great diagrams, mine...not so much. :|

Welcome!

I cannot take any credit for any of those fantastic wiring diagrams as ALL credit must go to Andy for them all. I can TELL you how to wire the Deluxe Player for what you want though.

Disconnect the wires at the pickup selector switch only coming from the push button switch.

Rewire the guitar like a traditional Strat. Work off this diagram:

http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wi ... s_1v_2t_5w

Upon completion, look at the lower half of the pickup selector switch. You'll see one terminal is not used. Solder a wire from that unused terminal to the terminal immediately to the left of it. This will allow the lower tone pot to work for both the middle and bridge pickups.

Onto the push button switch. You should still have the two original wires soldered to it. Now, it doesn't matter which wire of the two you use. Solder one of them to the terminal on the pickup selector switch which has your neck pickup soldered to it. Specifically and per the above diagram, the top half of the switch, second terminal from the left. Solder the other wire from the push button switch to the left terminal of the volume pot. This terminal will have the jumper wire coming from the selector switch. You can even solder this wire to either terminal of the jumper instead for as you can see, it is continuous to the volume pot. Having completed soldering these two wires will allow the neck pickup to be turned on with the push button switch regardless of where the pickup selector switch is set at/for. Note that your pickup selector switch shall continue to function as normal. That's it and enjoy!

"Having completed soldering these two wires will allow the neck pickup to be turned on with the push button switch regardless of where the pickup selector switch is set at/for."

I am a little confused, so forgive me if I read this wrong, but the Deluxe Player's extra button was designed for turning the BRIDGE pickup on or off when the selector switch is in either position 4 (neck and middle pickup together) or position 5 (neck pickup only). That way it allows you to have all the pickups on at the same time (4) or bridge and neck (5) combinations you don't get with standard strat wiring.

All I want to do is just add the tone pot to the bridge pickup. I want to keep everything else as-is so that (a.) I don't get more confused than I already am and (b.) if I ever re-sell it in the future, the next guy won't get confused either.

I appreciate all the advice and help I can get! Wiring and soldering has never been my strong-suit! Not that I can't do it, I just don't have much practise with it....yet....LOL!

No problem. Still, to achieve what you wish to accomplish, you would have to rewire your guitar like the diagram I provided and then, instead of wiring one of the push button wires to the neck pickup's terminal on the pickup selector switch, you'd wire it to the bridge pickup's terminal (top right to be exact).

Howdy chaps!

I may be a bit late on this one...

Shimmilou, you have an excellent memory! We did indeed cover this in a previous thread for forum user Pdestoop. I too couldn't find it... but I've still got the diagram. This Forums Search Function is merciless! At some point I should probably put all the diagrams up in a single thread with a Search Friendly title (if there is such a thing). Could be handy every now and then.

Should you change your mind and fancy a go, this may help...

...Or if your planning on taking your Strat to a competent Guitar Tech, why not print out the diagram for him work from.

Enjoy!

Andy

That's it!

Thanks Andybighair. I went back 50 pages and could not find it. Yes, nothing much when searching for "Deluxe Players Strat".

Since you remembered the name of the poster, he only had four posts, so I found the thread. Didn't try "dlx plyr Strat", which is in the title. Excellent memory yourself. 8)

No Andy, you're right on time with yet another outstanding diagram!

It is also a truly nice gesture on your part, offering the diagram to a prospective tech. However and a point to ponder, someone merely proficient in soldering would be the ideal recipient as a truly competent tech ought to know how to do this right off the top of her/his head.

Andy,

 A single thread with all the diagrams you have previously posted would be priceless. If you get the opportunity please start one, and if I may be so bold, I suggest you call it the "Big Hairy Wiring Diagram Thread", I think almost anyone could find it then.

That would be cool, might get to be a bit long and hard to search. How about a thread with links to PhotoBucket where each diagram can be easily found, with each link labeled as model of guitar and/or the name of a particular mod that the diagram represents?

Anyone else not getting email notices for replied topics?
