You will get a lot of argument on this one.

My preference is rosewood.

As Cafeathers said. For every opinion you get you'll also get a contradictory one. Which one appeals to you astetically? If you buy a good quaility guitar either on will sound excellent. If you're new to this you might not be able to feel the difference which is very subtle so try both out in a music store and see if you can feel it. If you can't feel it then get the one that look better to you. If it's a genuine Fender, either one will be worthy of you.

Hello Brucye,

Rosewood's better for me.
I'd really like ebony - maybe someday.

Cheers.

I prefer maple. Rosewood is warmer, maple is punchier and clearer (to my ears). I like the look too..

I have 2 guitars with rosewood, but I like the maple better. Not only for sound but for the look of it also.

I'd go with rosewood. Maple can feel a bit sticky to me...especially if my hands are sweaty. Rosewood stays fast. Just my opinion :-)

Hello Secretsoundz,

Quite a while back the neighbors kids on my street were
directed by their parents to address me as Mr. Bill.
Once my pals and workmates heard this, they ran with it
with it's Oh no prefix. Today theyv'e devolved back to
just Mr. Bill. So there you have it. 8)

Cheers

Some of the points that I remember peeps bringing up when this has been debated before here included:

1. the pores in rosewood are dirt magnets. Once you've got a good section of the grime in there it's going nowhere, so while it's of course important to make sure your fingerboard is clean every time you restring, you've got even less room to be cavalier with rosewood hygiene.

2. given a good couple of years of faithful devotion to your maple fingerboard, the finish will begin to wear off giving your guitar that dead sexy vintage look. Nothing says 'I've been around the block' more than a worn out maple fretboard, i feel.

Otherwise. Some insist the woods affect tone, while others completely disregard that as myth. I personally fall into the former category, and as has been said here already, rosewood seems warmer, while maple seems brighter and punchier. But I am careful to make sure that I use the term 'seems', as I am perfectly willing to accept that it might make no difference... it's just gonna take some hardcore evidence to convince me.

There cannot of course be any purely objective response to this question. Like with so much, it is up to preference.

Maple sure does feel nice and silky under my fingers and I prefer it aesthetically. But ultimately, if push came to shove, I wouldn't let fingerboard wood guide my shopping.
Shoo, otherwise I'd end up with serious GAS. I'd have to double my orders! :)

I like the looks of maple better but I like the feel of rosewood better. As far as tonality goes, neither truly affects it to the degree most insist it does. As always, YMMV.

I guess it's in all "what you want to hear". The strat was designed for single coil pick-ups. If you want to hear a "bright" sound,, get maple. That neck is 1-piece of wood. If you want a not-so-bright sound, then go for rosewood. That is a wood over a maple wood. And as for the "warm" sound,, get a tube amp.
