Long time waiting on an SG with a finish like that. You really have to like them as players, though. Keep in mind, scale lengths are different. Makes string bending more of a chore on a Strat. You can't have too many guitars, though. Hope they keep this one around long enough for you to get the necessary coin together.....or......see if you can buy it on time, interest free, at one of the box store. If you can get a year to pay...it's $100 a month as long as you pay it off before the end of the agreement period.

Here's my 2006 Standard in Cherry. I love it!

I've owned an Epiphone G400 in the past but there is no comparison to the fit, finish, tone and quality of the real deal. Funnily enough, the Gibson isn't neck heavy but the Epi had real problems with that. This SG is hands down the best Gibson I've owned.

hi , instead of finding the $ for a gibby sg , buy an epiphone sg 400 and put a set of gibson pups , cts pots 50's wiring and a couple of .22 uf pio caps into the bugger , for not a lot of money you will have an sg that sounds as good as the real thing 8) i went for 498 500t ceramic pups form gibson and what a sound , i've had many compliments about the old sg , most of the people think it's a gibson  . You can pick up an sg 400 second hand quite cheep and a set of S/H gibby pups and a few quid for decent pots and wiring , much cheaper than a giby , hth
cheers
Alan

I tried this myself and while it does make for a nice guitar, it's no Gibson. If you're happy with yours that's awesome but as someone who always wanted a "real" SG, it just didn't cut the mustard.

My suggestion is just get a Gibson... I have a well worn 61' Reissue that I scored off ebay for $760, and a Derek Trucks SG that I bought new... the G400 didn't come close to either of them. Save your pennies, get the Gibson.

Here are mine...

Here's a pic of the revamped Epi which I have since sold

'Economy' versions suffer from 'silk purse out of a sow's ear' syndrome. In its history the Epiphone company was a class act. It is now unfortunately become a shill for what Gibson has to provide to a customer base which can't rise cost wise to what the industry refers to as boutique high end gear. I am sure that there are Epiphone advocates out there who would argue the case with me. However, If PRS can build a quality instrument in the USA, they must be doing something right, and the rest of the industry could follow suit.

Are you referring to the PRS SE series or the new S2s? The SEs are from Korea, and the S2's, which are made in the U.S., are priced on par with Gibson SG standards... I'm a little confused. :?:
Not to mention that the SEs cost more than most Epi models, which I believe also come from Korea.

Epiphone did, and still does, make some great guitars, however I don't consider the SG clones to be amongst them. Yes, you can deck them out with new pickups and hardware and approximate the Gibson equivalent, but you can also put lipstick on a pig...

Thanks for you input. The S2's are what I am quoting.

The S2s seem like sweet guitars... I like them (the looks of them anyway) better than the stripped down Gibsons.

 I've completely lost the plot, did the original poster of this thread decide to get the SG?

I'm not partial to PRS's from a player's point of view. I've owned two but eventually swapped them out for Fenders. Wonderfully built and appointed guitars, but the Clapton Strat with its neck carve is my 'go to' instrument. However, PRS hard shell cases beat Fender's hands down.

As best as I can tell, we are still awaiting the OP's next move.

I had a PRS once too, and as you mentioned, they're beautiful instruments but I never really warmed up to mine either... I sold it to fund an amp purchase if I remember correctly.

To address the issue of SGs being neck heavy as someone mentioned, a leather strap remedies the problem... slippery straps and SGs are not a good pairing. Some seem more neck heavy than others but they all have a tendency to want to do the neck dive.

For whatever reason I've always loved SGs, but if I could only have one guitar I'd go for a H/S/S configured Strat any day of the week.

I looked back at that post. It appears that the Epi-SG is the culprit. The same didn't seem to be as true for the Gibby. It may have something to do with the relative weights of the body/neck woods. Balance is extremely important to the wearer of an object which is going to be supported by the shoulder for several hours, even with breaks.
