So my Strat is over at my friend's house while he solders in my new pickups and he's been taking so long that he loaned me his 1968 Gibson SG special, which plays like a dream. The action is super low but it doesn't buzz and no problem bending notes. So then of course I start doing some research about his axe and I come upon the SG Standard Limited Edition in vintage sunburst, and I'm like, "Whoa. That's beautiful."

And I can't stop thinking about where I'm going to get the roughly $1,200 to get one.

Hopefully this feeling will subside once I get my own guitar back, but until then I've got an SG on my mind...

hi , instead of finding the $ for a gibby sg , buy an epiphone sg 400 and put a set of gibson pups , cts pots 50's wiring and a couple of .22 uf pio caps into the bugger , for not a lot of money you will have an sg that sounds as good as the real thing 8) i went for 498 500t ceramic pups form gibson and what a sound , i've had many compliments about the old sg , most of the people think it's a gibson  . You can pick up an sg 400 second hand quite cheep and a set of S/H gibby pups and a few quid for decent pots and wiring , much cheaper than a giby , hth
cheers
Alan

SG's a nice guitar. A lot of good music's been made on them. You're basically looking at a mahogany set-neck guitar with humbuckers. If a person has a twelve hundred dollar budget, and wants that type of guitar, is that the best guitar?

If you look at Asian brands, there are some nice alternatives. US brands, not so much. Forget PRS!

If you're hankering for that fat mahogany and humbuckers tone in that price range for a new guitar, don't overlook a Carvin CT3 or a CT4, which includes a maple cap. A used one in mint shape can usually be had on Ebay for a very reasonable amount, leaving you some loot left over to get the pickups of your choosing. And if you're used to having a whammy, you can have it on the Carvin...not so much on the SG.

Just a thought.

I was just looking at this same guitar today on gibsons site, so sweet. I have 2 gibsons and they are worth every penny. 1200 is a steal for this beauty, great color also.

I really love the way they sound, but i feel they are unbalanced / neck heavy,
and feels like playing a toy, they do play very well, i just wish the body was thicker / heavier. IMO

Thanks for all the advice everybody. Woke up this morning and had a message on my phone of my friend playing my Strat with the new pickups in it and it sounded great even over the cell. He must have liked it because he played it for a few minutes. Gonna pick it up tonight and will let you know how it sounds in person. Hopefully this will cure my GAS for a while, at least until $1,200 magically appears in my bank account...

Yeah I have a 2009 cherry Gibson SG Standard and that thing is PHENOMENAL!!

Plays, sounds, looks, and even smells like a dream!

Having said that...... I also have an Epiphone G400 that doesn't feel as amazing...... but still plays and sounds great. It's not as awesome as the Gibson but I still enjoy it immensely and hope to never part with it.

They sound pretty much the same.... the Gibson has a little better clarity though. Here's a clip I did:

They both sound good to me. Unfortunately I'm not technologically advanced enough to videotape me playing my Strat with the new pickups, because they sound bitchin!

Can't say enough about Don Mare's pickups. They definitely cured my GAS!

There's a lot of PRS guitar models. Do you "Forget" them all? What about used? I'm occasionally tempted by the idea of a used CE 24 or one of the original USA made EG models but I've not pulled the trigger yet.
