looking for any knowledge on what the specs on a 1992 american standard strat were, and any wisdom on the quality of the builds from that time.

nitro/poly? neck shape/size? standard pickups ?

thanks in advance.

I own a '93 American Standard Strat which should be the same, specwise, as a '92 model. I bought the guitar new in '93 and it is a solid, well built, quality Strat. Mine is pretty much stock with the exception of Sperzel locking tuners and the addition of a pearloid pickguard (mine also came with a black tipped tremolo arm). No complaints about this guitar at all....it is the quintessential Strat. With regards to some of your questions:

    The finish is polyurethane.

The pickups feature flat Alnico polepieces. My model (same would apply to a '92) is pre-Delta Tone so it has the TBX control vs. the no-load pot and the bridge pick up is about the same output as the neck and mid. As part of the Delta Tone upgrade, the bridge pickup was slightly hotter and features two large bolts attached to the bottom that essentially act as a base plate. I think that the current American Series/American Standard pickups are basically the same with the exception of the staggered polepieces.

I am not that well versed on neck shapes, but it has medium jumbo frets, a 9.5" radius and *probably* what would be described as a modern C-shape. As far as I know, the neck should be pretty much the same or very similar to current American Standard Strat necks but without the rolled fret edges.

One more thing to mention....according to an excerpt from "The Stratocaster Chricles", George Blanda stated that all Strat bodies were made of alder until 1990 when it became difficult to obtain so they switched to poplar until around '93 or '94.
