Last six months?
None.
But I just had new pickups in my Les Paul copy--so it's like a new guitar.

Wow. My answer to this question has led me to believe I have a serious problem...

Pretty sure this sums up the last 6 months... 9 NGD's, of which 3 were sold or traded.

In the past six months? Well I got my last new guitar in August although I can't remember the exact date so.....a 2007 Custom Shop Time Machine '56 Strat Relic. Got a few pieces of gear since then.....a Warmoth neck, Custom Shop '54 pickups, etc....

For a couple of years I was really active as far as buying and selling and trading gear. Saw ALOT of guitars come and go til I got ahold of a '50's style Strat and I was hooked. I'm pretty happy with my gear right now. There's always more that I want, but there's really nothing in my collection that I feel is expendable. Which is one reason I haven't acquired anything new since August. Haven't really had alot of spending money and nothing I wanted to trade.

So my "G.A.S." seems to be under control for the time being. I do have a few things I've got my eye one however so we'll see how long that lasts.....

I'm not sure why we all do this. I mean do we really need up two 20 guitars? No, but it's an addiction. I remember in 04 when I bought about 5 guitars. The problem is that we have more money than sense. I'm not complaining. I just remember when I had only one and it was the best guitar I in the workd. I played it all of the time.

Now I've owned over 30 and some of them I've barely played. Others I've played a lot. About a year ago I thinned out my heard.

I've got a 12 string, a Les Paul and a few others I almost never touch. I'd say my black parts-o-caster is my main guitar right now.

Now I do use different guitars for different stuff. I love my Andy Summers Tele for a lot of stuff with effects.

I just with that I would use my Les Paul more.

Guitars are like women... so many, so little time, and no two are alike. Since I only have 1 woman, I have to sow the wild oats somewhere....

Sounds about right. There's some variation of a quote out there I've seen (probably falsely) attributed to Keith Richards about spending all his money on women, guitars and bourbon - the rest was wasted. Definitely sums it up.

I guess for me though, I don't have to have every guitar, and God knows I don't have the discretionary cash right now to do that. I try to avoid picking up guitars that duplicate things other guitars I have already does. Like the Tele I just picked up - I was thinking I would make that a dedicated open E/slide guitar, but it just sounds so much chunkier on earlier Jimmy Page/Joe Perry type riffing than my Strats, I just can't bring myself to set it up for slide. It fills a totally different role than either of my Strats. So NOW I have to find another dedicated slide guitar... I'm thinking an Epi Les Paul, replace the pickups with Burstbuckers, and call it a day. But then I'll need a real sunburst LP Standard just because - dammit, it's so hard! And we're just talking about electrics!

You are soooo right with this!!

Dispite my addiction I try to keep it in the low numbers, because it would just make me feel sad to have many guitars not being played much.
So I simply keep, what I think I NEED.

That is: 1 for slide in open G, 1 for warm 'n' smooth stuff, 1 for Bluesrock (think Status Quo, Walter Trout, ZZ Top), 1 for being tuned half a step down for SRV-like stuff.
That makes 4 strats.

I have a 5th with Swimmingpool routing, which I either will sell or make my humbucker Strat for heavier stuff. I haven't made up my mind yet.
For the heavy stuff I already have my 2 Ibanez guitars, but I always wanted to have a strat with two chrome humbuckers (like the mexican Blacktop model, but made in USA).

I always wanted a white Tele with black pickguard.

In sum, there's 7 electrics right now, there might be a Tele joining the family in the future but I guess (hope) that's gonna be it.

Together with my 2 acoustics that's fairly enough guitars. I already can't play them all as much as I would like because I have no band right now.

Of course, if I actually HAD a band, I probably would want a backup for each strat, ha ha ha.

Oh, oh, there we go again........

There are much worse things to be addicted to. We could all be crackheads, or tweakers, or Oxycontin addicts, or alcoholics, or smokers. And guitars can be sold at or near their purchase price, depending on how good of a deal you got. I hope to not ever have to sell any of my guitars. I've decided I'm getting one more guitar this year, a J Mascis Jazzmaster, and laying off for a while. I do eventually want another Tele and a 335/Dot style guitar, and a Les Paul if I can find one that is built well and plays well, which is something I haven't found yet. I might get an Epi Les Paul 100 to scratch that itch. It looks almost just like a "real" Les Paul and has the controls in the right place and comes in cherry burst. If I can find one that has the action low enough, which is something that I haven't found yet. And an SG would be nice, but with Gibsons you run into the same quality control issues you just don't have with Fender. Fenders are so much better than Gibsons in so many ways.

I've also bought 2 more guitars in the last 6 months that I no longer have. First is an Ibanez AEL20E acoustic/electric guitar that I bought as an xmas present for my sister (she LOVES it) (She better, as I have almost 500 dollars in it when you add up the price of the guitar, case, and small items like a cord and picks and miscellaneous items):

Image

Second was a Squier Bullet Strat in pink:

I returned the Bullet to the store so I could use the cash to buy my Marauder. Besides, I knew I would never bond with it. I just knew it. Every time I picked it up, it made me want to play my '50s Classic Series. So why not just pick up the '50sCS instead? And besides, the fretboard was stained with some black gunk that got my hands dirty every time I played it (I know it was an easy fix.) I feel bad when I think of returning it, but it was for the best. Had I kept it, it would have been an expensive wall decoration or a case queen, and I buy guitars to play. It was a beautiful guitar (the color reminded me of a 1958 Cadillac) and a TREMENDOUS value but the novelty of a pink guitar wore off in a couple of weeks. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this guitar to somebody starting out or somebody who just wants a second guitar to have for whatever reason. Now to put some money back for a Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster, which is tied for the second most expensive Squier model (The Jim Root Telecaster is more expensive.) I'm also thinking about buying another guitar as a gift, possibly a Blacktop Tele or a black Marauder, depending on my money situation. The Marauder is a terrific guitar that I would not hesitate to recommend to anybody, beginner or professional. It's that good. My brother likes it better than my Japanese mid-'80s Tele, and he LOVES that Tele. The Marauder may be the best value in Fender's lineup, especially if you can get it for the price I got it for ($336 brand new.)

When I first read this thread I thought "Wow these guys have problems!" Then after thinking about it.....I guess I do too. In the past 6 months, I have acquired a new Fender acoustic/electric, an 89 E series Squier strat, and will be picking up a 85 MIJ Squier this weekend. So add me to the group that needs help. Of course, I'm on the lower spectrum since none of mine cost more than $400 so it's OK. I really don't have a problem. Really.
