Hi Guys

I would like to change the string tree on my mex for a USA one, will it fit? If not is there an alternative?

Thanks

The Am. Standard type is supposed to promote greater tuning stability than the "butterfly" type. I like the looks of the vintage style more but that's just me. You can use the Am Standard trees, but you'll have to either file the guide nub off the bottom of the string tree, or drill small holes in the headstock for the guides to go into. You can see the "nub" I'm talking about in the pic below.

I have both on my Strats and couldn't experience any difference in tuning stability.
Just oil them and it's fine!

Maybe I was just lucky??

Honestly, there's absolutely no difference in my guitars regarding tuning stability.

Agreed entirely. But that's the idea of the Am. Standard ones, anyways.

When I used to work as a helicopter mechanic in the German army in the early 80s, I used gear grease of Bell Huey helicopters for that! (don't tell my former superior, ha ha ha)

That worked perfectly well with everything, string trees or tremolos. 1 tube = 50 Dollars those days.
Not a very helpful hint, is it??

Ok, back to topic.....

I have two of them on my MIM Standard Strat and my home-made Squire Affinity Esquire. I just drilled a couple of holes and installed them. Piece of cake. I did it just cuz I like the looks of them better. :D

I've the Ezy Glider (yep, it's the nickname for the American Series string retainer) installed on my black Squire Silver Strat.

If you are unhappy with the standard string tree, get rid of it and install a set of staggered lockers with short string posts which make the need of a string retainer unnecessary. For better results, replace the stock nut with an LSR roller or Graphtech.

Drill holes, the nubs are for stability. But, make sure the holes are in the correct spot before you drill.

The Squier strings trees above, one looks off-center???

It may look that way due to the camera, but it is not.

...I put a straight edge up against the photo. The top of the bottom roller is further to the right, the bottom of the bottom roller is further to the left. The top string tree is straight!

Well, considering that the guitar is mine and I installed both string trees, when I say that both trees are straight, they are straight. I don't care if you used a a ruler or not, I don't appreciate being called a liar.

I didn't call you a liar. I merely stated that when I took a straight edge to the photo, one tree appears to be straight, the other appears crooked.

You owe me an apology!

Yep, you did so because you doubted my word, and your actions constitute calling me a liar. I don't owe you squat except making you the latest member of my ignore list.
