Smoking in clubs up until all this PC BS came along and put a stop to it always went hand in hand as part and parcel of the institution where the vast majority of musicians involved never gave it a first thought, let alone a second one. Cigarette smoking is bad for you. Yea, I get it. The lingering residuals from smoke being repulsive? Yea, I get that too. Yet, there's something I don't get: With the phenomenon of relics, if one wants their guitar to synthetically look like crap, giving the illusion of many years being played anywhere and everywhere in the name of some phoney "mojo" (whatever that is supposed to be), why then wouldn't the same ilk want it also to smell and feel all the more like crap from genuine smoke residuals covering said brand new, desecrated instrument if they can get it? Surely, this would enhance the illusion by utilizing yet more of the five senses and would be infinitely more convincing (read, "deceptive") than just the look alone! Of course, it goes without saying that the guitar's case, inside and out would have to be equally aromatic and tacky, thus reinforcing the faux presentation.

I would be remiss if I didn't point out that smoke isn't the only additional accoutrement to be considered. There's beer, puke and a plethora of other substances all of which, equally valid and deserving for the instrument's adornment. I guess some of these would and should have to be reserved for 'deluxe' models.

As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.

I always asked that myself and never understood!

Why would I want to spend so much more money just to have my instrument destroyed right at production, which is a long winded and very expensive project.

I don't question the flair of a 25 to 40 year old (or older) rocked down instrument with history!!
I just don't get all this relicing stuff. It's just PRETENDING!!

Either play your guitar 5 hours a day for 25 to 40+ years or just leave it as is! Period!

You can't build a Sphinx today and make it a true copy of the original just by braking off the nose!

 Don't give them any ideas... Somebizzaredude will read this and cook up a stale beer, old smoke, and lingering puke aerosol that he will market to all the relic guitar producers making him a small fortune in the process. :P

He might become as rich as the guy who invented the fart candle...

I can see it now: "Musty Mojo", a must for the budding musician who simply cannot wait. Now in spray can or the handy pump bottle. And remember, it's not just for guitars any more! Buy it by the case and save!!"

Well if your looking or comparing odd things on guitars they do to create vintage copies,
look what is done by Fender to remake EVH's Frankenstein, cig burns on the headstock and everything to detail, then ask a kings ransom for it...
i don't get it. if you can buy the original, i see having it, but to pay out the a $ $ for a copy.?
it's not the guitar that makes them great players.

Hmmm... this thread is giving me ideas. I'm a professional cook by trade, and I've done my share of smoking (of foods....mostly, haha), and I'm thinking I could set up a nice smoker setup with a perforated pan inside a big roasting pan, a bunch of Old Milwaukee-soaked chewing tobacco in the bottom, place guitar body inside, sell on ebay = profit?? My white Strat already smells like your local friendly hole-in-the-wall dive bar, so maybe I should try this on my Olympic White MIM Jazz Bass. Hey, it could work.

This post is proof positive that entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in this country!

Make sure you patent it first and then just like Floyd Rose, you can license it to everyone and their mother for megabucks.

I learnt from the Custom Shop book that they used to spray cases for the Hendrix strat with Patchouli perfume to make the experience perfect.

They *are* sensitive to the topic. Maybe you can also have it for cigarette smoke? Costs just 200 USD extra.

Cheers

David

//PS: I think the Avril Lavigne Telecaster should come with a hair from Avril. 500 USD extra.
