I gabe a 1985 japanese strat, black solid body. Black headstock and I believe rosewood fretboard. It has a string lock at the top if the neck and Fender system III tremelo (missing the bar though). I am considering selling it but not sure what it's worth, any info would be great. Thanks.

Here is a link to pics of the guitar.

Hey, I just wanted to say thanks. I opened up your link and damn near puked all over my computer. I love animals, but this is a guitar forum. If you want an evaluation of your guitar, then post your photos somewhere else. :x

Folks,

Don't open the OP's link unless you also want to puke. I have reported this post to the mods.

I'm sorry about that, but I don't have the pics anywhere else. I deleted that photo. I know this forum is for guitars, thats why I posted in here.

I thought was posting in a guitar forum, I guess I'm wrong. This is apparently a forum of snobby jackasses. I was asking for an honest opinion, but thanks to that dipwad up there everybody else is scared. Pansies.

The rule of thumb is "it's worth only what someone will pay you for it"

So go online to eBay or other Google options and do your own research. You can also use Ebay's search to find the results of completed auctions, if you can't find a live one.

Personally, I think $400 to $500 is probably generous.

I did not see any pics of it, but from the brief description it is a Contemporary Strat and probably worth about $300 - $500 depending on condition.
Missing trem arm does drop the price as it's not complete.

Is it short scale? I have a Gibson-scale Contemporary Squier Strat from the same era in Japan.

I wouldn't be too hard on (even though I'm sure he's got some thick skin and not a pansy) Bluesky636. In all the stuff I've seen him write on this forum, he has always been honest, knowledgable and helpful.

As to your question: From what I've seen with most MIJ Fender instruments, you could, depending on condition, probibly get about $450 for it to the right buyer.

MIJ or MIM instruments don't really go up in value. On the flip side, they don't go down either.

From my obswervations I say most non-vintage Fenders don't go up in value until the older guitars are out of people's price range.

i.e. I purchased my '77 Hard tail Strat for $750 back in '02. That same guitar is now work more than twice now. To think 20 years ago everyone panned them.

A few months ago I purchased ba painted stripped '79 Strat w/ Van Zandt pupsfor under $800, but had that guitar been in mint shape I'd be looking at paying 2x's that much.

I believe the market is driven buy a few things:
1. Older Fender instruments are out any regular person's price range. Even the early guitars from the '70s are starting to gain value.
2. People buy what they remember from their childhood.

I hope this all helps

I checked completed ebay auctions for "strat* mij" and the prices are all over the map. A '57 mij reissue went for $600 and it was the highest seller. Other mijs as low as $225 didn't sell.
