I'm sorry if thst has been posted before, but me being new to Strats which tremolo do you prefer. Mine has the 2 point system ( Standard Squier). Just wondering what are the pros and cons are of both. I know the American Standard has the 2 point and the MIM has the vintage. Thanks

Why what makes you think that this issue has never been discussed before :D . The vintage vs. modern tremolo debate has been raging for years. I personally prefer the modern 2-point American Standard tremolo, but ultimately a properly set up guitar (regardless of weather it uses a 2-point or 6-screw trem) is what's more important. In theory, the 2-point vibrato should offer better tuning stability than the 6-screw type, but I honestly feel that it's a bit overstated. You can get good results with either.

Hey y'all! I've always had the vintage type and was leary of the newer style. I HATE change... usuallly! Ha! Anyway, I recently got a new Am Std with the 2 point and you know, I think it actually works better. I've always had good luck setting up the trems so they come back pretty well but I do think this 2 point is more stable. Maybe change isn't so bad?? I seem to be able to do deeper dives with it- like right before the solo parts on Little Wing for example, and I do that pretty hard there and for the rest of the song. And the guitar is still near perfect in tune after the song! Pretty Good! So yeah, you can get good results with both.

Right on! Thanks so much!! Especially since I (hope to) consider myself a tone guy. Yep, Am Std, black white maple. Factory pups- sorry not too exciting in the way of tricks to offer you. The other sunburst guitar is a '62 reissue also stock. I've had that one about 20 years or so. Amp is usually Blues Deville sometimes 66 blackface super, sometimes a 70's Princeton. I don't always use distortion/pedals but sometimes some compression for sustain and sometimes the green hardwire pedal (slight distortion) and sometimes a green rhino if there's a ZZtop tune coming up! The key for me has been to let the guitar and amp sound like what they sound like and not to try and "improve" on what it is. Most guys tend to have one sound, and have so many pedals going that you can't even tell it's a strat. To me, the reason we play Fenders is for that sound, which is beautiful to me! Hey, thanks again bud!

My top 4 favorite players are Hendrix, Beck, Clapton and SRV.

Vintage 6 screw - Hendrix, Clapton & SRV

Modern 2 point - Beck

Beck is the master of the tremolo bar. I don't know of any other player that uses it as often and as well as he does. He makes his guitar sing, laugh, shout and cry with his tremolo. His guitar playing is a work of sonic art. He also has an LSR Roller Nut & locking tuners. In other words, his guitar is designed to stay in tune under heavy tremolo bar use.

Check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lw8fBR_X ... re=related

With that said, if you use the bar often you may be better served with the modern unit (and locking tuners).

I prefer the traditional look of the vintage tremolo. My Highway One has the vintage trem and fender Schaller locking tuners. I set it up with 1/8" float. I use my bar often - but I don't go crazy with dive bombing and squeals like Beck - if I did I think I would follow his lead and go with the modern unit.

i prefer the vintage 6 screws bridge, i can do everything i want with them, i never want to try the 2 point as in my opinion they don't look good, i do not know how they perform though. check out some of my tremolo playing

Thanks for the feedback, and I've done other research as well. Personal preference is all it is. For now I'm just going to keep my 2 point slightly touching the body. It's seems alot of Strat players do that whether Vint. or 2 point.

I've been playing Strats since 1968 and use the tremolo as it was design intended. Regardless of whether it is a "2" or a "6", if properly set up, either serves me equally well.

Jeff Beck and the older players made good use of the trem bar,
but to see a real master at it, watch some of Steve Vai's stuff.
I do like the looks of the 6 screw over the 2 post system, but
if i were doing a lot of trem work, i would have to go to some of the better systems.
