I just bought this on eBay. It was listed as an E Series MIJ with an 85 body and 62 Reissue neck made in 87. I know next to nothing about guitars. I bought this to learn how to play and got it cheaply enough so as long as it plays well, I won't really care what it is.

I have not yet received seen it in person. From the pics I notice the head is missing the "Stratocaster", the "Made in Japan" and even the Squire logo or the "Squire Series". No idea why. If it has a serial number, should it not have the others?

It has been shielded and has a replacement bridge. Any idea about the bridge? I have not been able to locate one like it through Google.

Guessing it has Japanese electronics as the pickups are not staggered... think i read that somewhere on the Internet.

Yeah I don't think thats a genuine "Fender" Stratocaster by the no truss rod at the nut,the 12 fret dots and the back of the guitar carve looks off?oh and the non serial number, but Looks like some good vintage locking tuners though!thats a plus!

I would definitely try to contact the seller, and if they aren't willing to make things right, file a claim with ebay and/or paypal. Unfortunately I've lived/learned the ebay thing too, but in my experience they take claims seriously. I once bought a somewhat expensive piece of recording equipment on ebay, and the seller decided to split the country and never ship or use the money for meth or God-knows-what. Once Paypal got involved, they refunded my money while they tried to track down the seller, and I didn't have to worry about a thing.
There's also a chance the seller somewhat-legitimately didn't know the guitar was a fraud, but if they care whatsoever about their feedback they may gladly take the guitar back and give you a refund if you scare them a little.

I have been reassured by the seller that it is indeed all Fender parts except for the bridge. I did not buy it, expecting it to be a collectors item. I just want a good quality guitar and to know what it is that I purchased.

Reporting back on what I bought and what I think of it...

It is indeed a contemporary MIJ body, I can see the System I anchor location as they were not filled and the candy apple red is the original finish with only minor scratches and dents. I have not pulled the neck yet to check it out but it does appear to be a Fender 62 RI neck. Btw, the patina on the nickel tuners is beautiful. The finish has been mostly sanded away on the back of the neck leaving it well worn and silky smooth. To me, while not as attractive as a nice finish, it is heaven to hold... I love to feel of raw wood.

Today I went to a local guitar store and checked out the new Squires and MIMs... well, I don't know what others like in the feel of their guitars but they do not feel like my MIJ. Ever read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maint? "Quality" is the word for my MIJ.

As for how it plays? Nice sustain, the entire thing firmly resonates and unplugged it is acoustically loud and clear. However, plugged in to my Mustang I it does not quack as much as I would like, so I will try replacing the pickups to get more of a vintage tone. I will also be replacing the bridge/tremolo for a more traditional look.

I am more than pleased with my first guitar.

+1

It maybe a japenese body but not sure if its a japenese "fender" body as to me it looks more like an ibanez body the way its cut?

I personally would be mad if I bought a guitar that had a logo on it and was not genuine but being passed as!but thats just me

But anyways enjoy Your new mystery strat!

Update on my guitar...

Yes, it is an 80's MIJ Fender body, it used to have a System I tremolo, so I am pretty sure about it. The neck also seems to be a MIJ Fender "62 RI" type. It has the extra wide inlays, at the 12th fret, vintage frets, seems to be of very nice quality when compared it to other new/used Fender necks at GC. The Fender decals are also above the finish which is consistent with 62 RI necks. So I am reasonably pleased and confident of the neck and body. I also replaced the bridge with a large block MIM Fender tremolo and added the spring for the tremolo arm, which helped a lot.

The electronics however were less than impressive, 500k mini pots with a .033 uF green chicklet tone cap. So I bought a loaded pickguard with CS 69 pickups and CTS 250K pots, Fender .022 uF tone cap and 50's wiring.

It did not sound bad to me before, but now it now sounds very clear, love the CS 69's. So it has been upgraded about as much as I can. Next it is off to get a professional setup. I am curious to hear more from the luthier about it. I am sure he will pull the neck for a truss rod adjustment and I will have him examine the neck further.

Doesn't that appear to be an American body because it had at one time, a two point tremolo on it? Logo on the headstock seems to be a new logo on a vintage neck. With the vintage style tuners, probably a MIJ Reissue neck with really isn't not that bad. Electronics are probably MIJ as well.. Just my thoughts.

I think rather than a MIA two point tremolo, it had a System I tremolo (also a two post tremolo) which was common on the 85-87 MIJ strats.
