mostly when i use the whammy on my new 08 i get the dreaded ping and detunage, it happens when im tuning it as well. I know it has something to do with the string embedding and marking the nut and the best thing to do is to replace the nut but are there alternatives? i have heard of using vasoline on the strings where they cross the nut but that could get messy, also i have heard of simply coloring in the nut where the strings pass with a pencil, the graphite will help the strings slide. i think i will try that, but does anyone have any other tips, or can give feedback on the pencil thing, thanks!

Graphite from a pencil is a temporary solution, as is Chapstick
You could try 1200 grit waterproof sandingpaper to widen the nutslots.
My advice is to bring it to a tech who has nut files or let him replace the
nut with a graphite one.

Good luck,

Peter

If that is whats happening then yes your nut is not slotted properly. Unless you know what you are doing or aren't that handy in crafts then take it to a pro. If you file or sand too much the wrong way you'll have to get it fixed anyway.

The best solution in 3in1 oil.
Graphite s a popular choice but I avoid it.

Unless of course there is damage to the string slots in the nut.
