I recently purchased a standard ash/rosewood Mex strat. My friend lent me his 12 yr old mexican standard strat all original to compare. I need to put my volume twice as high to obtain the same volume as the older version. Both have been set up exactly the same. Any idea why the older strat pickups are more powerful while looking exactly the same as the newer version.

Thanks

Did you but your strat used? Is it possible that a previous owner replaced the 250k pots with 500k or higher? Perhaps they messed something else up.

No mine is brand spanking new out of the box. I believe Fender had to use a different type pickup in their older models like the one I borrowed which is all original also. Appearance wise they both look the same.

Thanks

Louder doesn't mean they sound better, but it's not surpising that things have changed in 12 years. Which model MIM strat is it?

BTW a higher pot value would actually increase the output (but would give you more treble)

Thanks Eddie,
My new mim strat is the standard with ash natural wood look body with rosewood fingerbord. The older strat mim that I borrowed is standard cobalt blue. When I crank the new one up. Both guitars sound about the same. It is just more of a curiosity thing of what fender might have done differently in the later years. I can also check back at Guitar Center where I bought it for their thoughts.

Thanks again

Gary

Do you think it might have something to do with the ash resonating differently than the alder? How do they compare in weight?

Here's another comparison you might want to try:

Acoustically, without being amped up, strum all the strings open while lightly holding your left hand on the headstock. Is there a big difference in the amount of vibration you feel at the headstock between the two guitars?

Then again, it may simply be that the older strat pickups have a higher output... I suppose you could plot the output on a scope if you have access to one.

Thanks Eddie.

The ash is a slightly heavier guitar. But I think it has more to do with the pickups with the older one having a higher output. A friend of mine has test equip & I will see if that can be checked. And as you mention about the pots. They may also be different on the newer version causing less output. If I never had another guitar to compare to in the quiet of my own home, I probably would have never picked up on the lower output of my new guitar. When I was trying them out in the noisy store before I bought, it was not something I was necessarily looking for. Now that I know, I would check this out when trying out different guitars in the future. Live & learn.

I will try out the unamped vibration test that you mention just for curiosity.

Thanks again, Gary
