a little background first.

in 2001 i lost a job i had for 20 years. for my birthday my wife and her family bought me a squier strat. she knew i had a strat years ago, and thought it would make me feel better. it did, and 2 weeks later i got a new job-yeah.

ffw to today. i got back into playing, got new guitars, amps, effects, etc, and the squier is sitting there unplayed. i was thinking about modding it a bit. not as a moneymaker, just something to putz around with. my thoughts include changing the pups, and maybe even the neck.

any thoughts, or recommendations for replacement parts?. it's an affinity, about 2001 i expect.

thanks!

play it a little like it is, at least she won't be unplayed.

Heck yeah man, do it.
I have a 2002 that I'm always messing with, just nickel-dime stuff here and there.
I think the only thing left about it that is original is the body and neck.
Definitely not one of those return-on-investment that I'm going for, just a good fun hobby.
Looks better, sounds better, plays better...
I have learned a lot in the process.

Oh, and one of those things I've learned:
You're going to be drilling some holes.
have fun !

...oh, and as far as replacement parts goes, if your 2001 is anything like my 2002.

"F" replacement tuners won't align with the tiny post-holes in the headstock.
For some reason, the nut grooves won't accommodate medium gauge E,A, or D strings.
I don't know what you play, but you might have to carve those out a little.

But if you said you were looking at maybe getting a new neck, these are not an issue.
I understand there are some neck-pocket compatibility considerations, so make sure you measure before you buy.

Pickguard hole pattern is slightly different. I had to drill two small shallow in the body.
Pickups and other electroncs fit just fine, so what you get is a matter of your personal taste.

guitar center has a close-out special on fender noiseless pups for 89 bucks, so that may be my first step
