Hi there fellow guitarists.

i have just recently bought a richie sambora strat (yes the one from live in london!) and i have come to need to a complete neck replacement on it as the previous owner bought the guitar with the mindset of putting a telecaster neck on it and wasted no money or time trying to do a good job of it. The telecaster neck was bolted on very dodgy and has a 6-8mm gap in the neck pocket on the side as well as not sitting very flush. The tele neck was some cheap OEM model. To be honest the bloke just sentenced this guitar the death penalty i nearly died when he told me this and i had to ask why? his response was he always wanted a strat, but hated the necks on them and got hold of this guitar cheap so he gave it a shot, also telling me the stars look girly. i didnt really know there was a difference in the feel of strat or tele necks but apparently there is to this bloke. Obviously this bloke is a complete tossa' exscuse my language, but he obviously didnt know what he had i took no time to tell him either i just wanted to ressurect this guitar as there so rare. i immediately asked if he still had the original neck and after salvaging through cardboard boxes, tool cabinets for over 45 minutes in this blokes shed we found the neck under his work bench with oil, dirt and dust and just crap all over it and as well as part of the headstock being broken cutting off the "ra" in the sambora signature and the fretboard being badly badly damaged it looked like someone attacked it with a hammer and sandpaper. the bloke told me i wouldnt be impressed by the state of it if we found it as he reckons he had a hard time getting it off and he was right. i paid the man $350 for the smashed neck and body, the body was fine besides the tele neck attached to it, the pickups and floyd rose bridge seemed fine.

so now i got the body sitting here ready to go with no neck so i am getting a neck built from scratch, the old neck is unrepairable the only thing i will gain from it is measurements.

So this leads me to my question and im sorry for rambling on so much but i had to tell that story about that twat to someone, my friends dont understand values of some guitars its like talking to a brick wall hahah. How do i properly measure my guitar neck and guitar neck pocket etc an everything else that needs to be measured for a neck replacement? i have a rough idea but i would like to be certain as this neck is gonna be setting me back a bit of money.

does anyone know what must be measured and how to? is there any blank data sheets that point to a specific part of the neck and has a blank space next to it to write measurements?

Also Richies neck profile what do you reckon itd be looks like a C to me but i can never really tell. cheers in advance guys and thankyou for your time and brainstorming.

I use both a digital caliper and a micrometer for measuring. The caliper works best for fret width and height, nut width and width of the fretboard at the 12th fret. I use the micrometer to measure the depth of the neck from the face of the fretboard to the back of the neck. I do this just above the 1st fret, not including the height of the fret, and just above the 12th fret. These are measurments that you will often find listed so you can compare what you have to what is available.
