Just wondering if anyone has tweaked the microtilt system on their strat?

Can it be removed? Would you remove it if it improved your tone or sustain?

Quite honestly, I wish Fender would eliminate this system. It seems to me that if you want to transfer resonance in a strat from the neck to the body, or vice versa, designers would shoot for the most solid connection possible at this critical connection point?

I have an original 72 and I did tweak it once. It worked well and I never had a problem with the system or my neck. Though a lot of people disagree, it's actually a decent system. My guitar sounds and plays great, and I've never had a problem with it. I think if you removed it, you would have all kinds of stability problems. I don't think you would gain anything tonally by removing it.

I'm not exactly positive how it works. I imagine that there is a metal plate at the bottom of the neck pocket and a screw that bears on the metal plate and moves up and down to change the angle of the neck relative to the body.

I'm thinking that this system is used to replace shims that can get lost and are in general, more difficult to work with and tweak.

I suppose if the microtilt screw is popping out the bottom of the neck and hitting this metal plate, there exists a very poor connection between the neck and the body?

It just seems that there needs to be a better way?

It's actually no worse than a shim. You only need to move it very slightly. I've never had any problems and the neck is still tight in the pocket. No tuning or stability problems.

Hello strataholic,

I have never had to use the micro-tilt---yet,
but I remember putting a dime in the neck pocket
for a shim in a quest for better action.

Cheers.

I switched up from 9s to 10s maybe about 2 weeks back. When I tried to set my action to my comfortable level I got some faint buzz in areas above the 15th fret. I put a 1/4 turn of slack on the truss rod. Today I checked my relief and the wood had relaxed enough since then and it was almost double the recommended .010". When I tightened up the truss rod I got those faint buzes with no where near the action I preferred. So I tried the Microtilt. I losened the neck screws then gave it a little less than a half a turn. After tightening the neck bolts I tuned up. No more buzz. I lowered the action where I like it and I'm a happy camper.

I also recently change string gauge up to 10s from 9s, and also had to use the micro-tilt adjustment. It worked perfectly. As far as sustain, there should not be much difference because the micro-tilt set screw is tight against the neck plate, and therefore would transfer vibrations from the neck to the body. I'm happy with mine.
