With the backplate off, it allows more air into the springs, thus allowing more natural reverberation. The more springs, the more reverberation, the more reverberation, the greater difference in tone. If you hold the body of the guitar further away from yourself, you will actually acheive more airflow and greater tonal differences. HAFD!

??????

I've never heard that theory before.

For those looking for the finished look of the back plate but also wanting better access to the strings ... I saw a picture in the pics of your strat string where someone took a router to their backplate and enlarged the hole and it added an interesting look to his axe. I thought he bought a replacement cover, but he actually did it himself.

When playing Avant-Guard tunes like Third Stone from the Sun, you can "Do Things" to the trem block and Spings that sound very.......Avant-Guard. So I leave it off my main Strats. Not to mention I lost the one off of my First Strat. I leave it on My Buddy guy so I don't loose it, and, so I don't do anything too Avant-Guard with my Buddy Guy. I'd rather rapair my Workhorse.

My 72 has six holes in the plate. I never had a problem changing strings. I've seen plates with one hole though.

The air around the springs stuff is total BS IMHO.
First off, springs will vibrate just the same in a vacuum. 2nd, I don't think that reverberation is actually heard through the pickups.

What I don't understand is why they don't make the access slot just a little further up or bigger to accommodate the location of the end of the tremolo block when the strings are off.

I was having some April Fool's Day fun with that theory. Didn't expect it to be taken seriously. :D

I read that Eric Johnson said he keeps the backplate off cause he notices a tone difference. That seems pretty extreme. I don't have mine on just cause it doesn't seem necessary and looks cooler. It's just easier to throw a string quickly in there in the spur of a moment.

LMAO!

It amazes me how such utterly ridiculous postulations can sustain themselves, gain credibility and ultimately, become 'infallible', "web dogma".

I guess the next logical progression of events would be to expound on how the width and composition material of a guitar strap is directly proportionate to the sustain of the guitar it is on, especially if the player is wearing long sleeve, flannel shirts.

Martian, I thought it was an accepted fact that a wider strap, especially leather, increases sustain.
As does wearing shoes with a harder sole material. If you stand on your toes while playing, you can reduce the amount of sustain.

Ah, but to what degree when one's mouth is open, with perceived grimaces of pain while soloing?

I know someone who knows someone who said that he read on an ultra reliable web site that in addition to what you've said, which is ABSOLUTELY TRUE by the way, and anyone who dares debate it is a fool, that the shape of one's open mouth, coupled with their oral hygiene habits DIRECTLY affect sustain too. And let's not even get into the spinach between the teeth effect when it comes to vibrato!
