No impact on tone as far as I can tell.

However, while we're at the back, import neck plates are .60 and made of a softer alloy that can dent the wood when tightened. You could replace with a Callaham .75 stainless that is stronger, thicker and less likely to bend.

No difference in tone. I keep mine off because, like you said, it is eassier to replace you strings. Call me lazy, but I don't want to take off the back plate each time I replace my strings.

Of all the tone myths, the one that goes around about how the tone of a Strat changes when you leave the back plate off is the nuttiest.

Well, okay, ONE Of the nuttiest.

I maintain that it does change the tone. while its not gonna make it sound like a different pickup, or anything drastic. i took mine off, and now my strat is less jangly. before when i had it on, the guitar had a natural reverb effect almost. plus it is easier to string now.

but really, believe what you want. i just think that it does affect sound slightly.

I think the "jangly" is just because you can now hear the springs more with the plate off as it' no longer causing interference with the sound waves coming from the trem block cavity.

I damp my springs with weather stripping.

One other thing about the back plate - back in the '80s when I was giging regularly and was young and slender (not like I am now at 46) I sometimes used to take my shirt off when I got too sweaty. The girls didn't seem to mind. I had been subjected to electrical shock when my bare, sweaty skin touched any of the metal parts in the tremolo cavity. It taught me to always replace the back plate. Besides, you shouldn't need to remove the cover or adjust anything back there unless you are switching string gauges. After you've deceided on what strings to play you should have no problems restringing with the back plate on.

My new Mex strat now has a cutout in the backplate below the bridge to make it easier to restring without removing the plate. Fender finally figured that one out. With a little ingenuity, one could cut out a solid backplate to expose the string hole area below the bridge. That's what I would do on an older model if I had one.

The EJ doesn't even have a trem cover. I see no need for it other then cosmetic. Plugged in, it has no affect at all on tone. It's just a piece of plastic that doesn't affect body resonance at all.

I just like the more finished look not having the guts (springs etc.)exposed. Oh well, to each his own.

In all the concerts I saw SRV perform he didn't have a backplate on #1 (his beat up tobacco sunburst he most often played. Usually he used 4 springs but I have counted five a time or two. I do recall seeing him play "Lenny" on the guitar his wife gave him back when he was really struggling and that also didn't have a back plate. It is easier since SRV usually had his tech set up his guitars with new strings every performance. He also liked to have his strings soldered around the twist above the balls of his strings.

With the backplate off, it allows more air into the springs, thus allowing more natural reverberation. The more springs, the more reverberation, the more reverberation, the greater difference in tone. If you hold the body of the guitar further away from yourself, you will actually acheive more airflow and greater tonal differences. HAFD!
