Hello - I'm trying to figure out this 1965 strat paint job.

Upon a quick glance, this looks like it was originally an olympic white paint job and over the years has turned the "banana" color. The paint also has extensive cracking. Both indicating its an old paint job. One might think its original, however if it was, the paint under the pickguard should be more white then the body as it is protected from the UV lighting.

The body also has the white primer used by fender and shows the "S" mark in the neck pocket and has the classic paint missing. All the screw holes are void of paint.

And under a Black Light it shows the correct glow. However what is kind of interesting, is that I see a red glow in the neck pocket. I don't get this at all.

Since I already have an original 65 strat, I know the things to look for...from the "hairs" in the bridge pup, to the routing lines in the pup cavities. The question isn't if its a 65 body...it is.

These are things I find strange....

If this was a refin, you'd be able to see layers of paint...yet there isn't any..there are only two colors on this guitar...the white primer and top coat.

About the only conclusion I can come up with (and even this doesn't make total sense to me)...is that the guitar was repainted a long time ago, and when they did it, they tried to match the existing aged color. And they painted it with the pickguard off. But again, you'd think the neck pocket would have paint in it. You'd think also there would be evidence of the paint in the screw holes...there isn't any. Nobody really back then would pay much attention to all this..they would have just hung the guitar, no screws in it and painted it...neck pocket and all.

But what I don't get also is that there is a glow under the top coat from the black light..but there is no glow where the pickguard would be.

Anyway...I thought I'd share this will all of you...and get your 2 cents.

This picture shows the classic "S" pencil

To me it looks like its not the original by the semi-gloss look that looks like model paint?

Where do you come up with that conclusion? Model Paint? Semi-Gloss?
What kind of experience do you have when it comes to vintage strats?
I can assure you it's not model paint.

I appreciate the honesty....its a lost art!

I would have thought I would have received more replies on this by now, but I guess others are just as confused as I am, and I know quite a bit about the 65 strats.

I will go and answer peoples post from way back if no one replies if I know any thing about it or not because it gets under my skin when I see 140 views and no replies on a post :x

thats how I found You!

so maybe someone on here will see this and get there head out of there $@! :?:

You have been here since October, have 28 posts, and you are an expert at analyzing the motives and personalities of all the members of this forum? Did you perhaps stop to consider that the people who have looked at this thread don't have an answer and rather than saying something idiotic and offending the OP (model paint?) they choose to not respond? I assure you that there are people on this forum who have forgotten more about Fender guitars than you will ever know. So perhaps you should take your head out of your $@! and think before you post.

To jusplainwacky: I don't know the answer to your question because I am not an expert on 65 Strats. I'm more of an amp guy. I don't know why some of the members of this forum who are experts have not responded, but I can assure you that it is not for the reasons put forth by russzfender.

Thanks....

I pretty much figured that most people were just as confused as I am.

Perhaps I need to find someone local in the Bay Area that might know.

Good luck. I'm sure you'll be able to find someone to help you out. Oh, and pay no attention to those that like to whine and complain about this forum (don't understand why they stay if they hate it so much). There are a lot of good people here willing to help out others without denegrating other forum members.

The more I look at the photos, the more I believe that the white undercoat is the original finish, and it's been painted over. The pic up cavity where the wood has been chipped between the pick ups at the top, the paint looks awfully thick over those chips, and not so much on the opposing smooth side. The black light kinda supports that too, it glows everywhere you'd expect an overcoat to be thinner. If I'm correct, then a lot of care was taken around that paint stick mark during the process.

While I am no paint expert, a couple of thoughts...looks like the finish is original. The white undercoat looks right along with the top coat of nitro. Could the difference in whites in the pickup cavaties be where the undercoat didn't get covered by the top coat? Hard to tell from the pictures and don't see any difference there with the blacklight.

It appears the body is made of Mahogany...something Fender did about this time frame, mostly on Telecasters, but not unheard of on strats either. I wonder was the finishing process the same for the mahogany? Since it is a different type of open grain wood...would they or did they alter the process?

As for no paint in the screw holes, if the guitar were taken apart a couple times, nitro can be a little brittle, it might just be from wear of the screws going in and out?

Either way, would love to see that 65 all back together!

FWIW

Hey jusplainwacky, It is hard to give you an honest evaluation of something like this without more information. Like first to authenticate that is it fore sure a 1965 Strat. None of use know you from Adam or anything about the guitar. Also the problem is that 1965 was 47 years ago. Man I have had vintage guitars and the history can be amazing in that long of time. It could have been stripped and refinished by someone in the 1970s. It could be original. Who knows. And then if you become pillory at people who do make a comment, people will be gun-shy!

But here is an assumption, based on being possibly a real Fender from 1965, with the original paint: This could have been white Olympic White, which was a finish a color available in 1965. Fender used lacquer then and from what I remember they sealed the wood with some type f sealer that sometimes did not set well with the color finish. then also over time the color coat, being really just du-pont automotive finishes, would check (get cracks), darken, when exposed to UV, and would rub and chip fairly easy. (the reason why when CBS got a hold of Fender they went to a polyester finish and CBS got a hold of Fender in 65.....) Maybe what you could be seeing is an aged, original Olympic White finish that has yellowed and aged over time.

But then there is that weird gouging in the bridge route that does not look original. It would be good to post a few more picts, like the headstock, serial number, butt end of the neck, a close up of the bodies neck socket. Then more could be told.
