I'm new to this forum and fender guitars. I came across a 1974 in my friends garage. It's mocha brown and it's neck is a little chewed up on the sides but the fretboard is still good. Everything on it is original and we had guitar center check out the neck and they said it was good. The pick guard is lifted up a little bit on the fretboard pickup. I offered to give him 500 but he says it's worth at least 1000. I was wondering what you guys thought?

If it's all original it's worth considerably more than $1000.00

Welcome Ibanezking.

I owned a '74 but I don't recall that finish being an option? :?

Pictures would help.

A 1974 Stratocaster in good shape is worth about $2500.00. If it is all original and all that. He should have slapped you for offering him $500 LOL. Seriously though, if he will sell it to you for $1000, that may be reasonable since it isn't in mint condition, and you are friends and all. These 1970's Fenders are not nearly as bad as some people have claimed them to be. I own 4 CBS Fenders and they are all top notch instruments. :)

It's in decent condition. The paints a little wierd and we were looking it up and it doesn't have the "desired" pickups. I forget what they're called lol. I'll post a few pics of it later. I polished it up for him and threw new strings on it. I also had the neck checked out to see if it was bent or anything and they said it was good and everything on it is 100% authentic. Some of the knobs are loose and the bridge pickup has a wiring problem I think. It's a fuzzy and it's output is extremely weak. Other than that it's in pretty good shape.

Yes, it was. I have one in fact. The official catalog name of that color was "Walnut," though it's commonly called "mocha brown." That color was the first Strat to recieve the black plastic. So if the OP's guitar is original, it ought to have a black pickguard.

Color is original (custom color since 73).

Cheers,
Robin

I do recall seeing some brown Strats from that period. The least desired color ever produced by Fender.

I've been seeing early '70s Strats going for $2000 to $3500, depending on condition.

I remember buying my own '77 hard tail Strat back in 2003 for $750 dollars. They are now going for up to $2000.

I recently scored a stripped down '79 Strat with Van Zandt pickups for about $800. The guitar looks like SRV played it every night in a club, but it plays and sounds amazing.
