Hello,

Which kind of woods Fender use for stratocaster's body?
I know about only maple and alder bodies.

All-maple is very rare for a Strat body (I'm not sure if Fender has ever done an all-maple Strat body). Fender sometimes uses flame/quilt maple as a thin decorative cap (maple caps can have tonal effects, but they need to be pretty thick to change the tone).

Alder and ash are the traditional common Strat body woods. Fender has also used basswood, poplar, and mahogany.

Squier Strats and other non-Fender "Strats" sometimes use agathis or sen.

Thank you for your message,
Actually I want to do a Stratocaster body.
And I'm thinking about Madagascar Ebony.(Because it's the highest wood)
What do you think about Madagascar Ebony ? :)

Thanks

Definitely heavy. What does "highest" mean, and why do you want to use ebony?

Isn't ebony on the Fed's endangered woods list along with rosewood?

I'm not sure but everyone sell Madagascar ebony. No one can't cut endangered woods but they are selling old woods. :)

Ebony is not used for bodies, it is used for necks and fretboards. It is an extremely bright sounding wood with lots of sustain, attack, and stability.

And very, very spendy, too! And it can be difficult to work. Doesn't seem like a very good idea at all, speaking as a professional woodworker of 45 years and a guitar player for 47. But good luck if you persist - I think you're gonna need it.

Fender uses ash and alder for bodies.

They have used poplar, but they are rare.

I was the lumber buyer for Fender/Rogers/Rhodes in Fullerton, Ca in 1982.

Strat bodies were of Mississippi delta swamp ash. Necks were of Maple and only delivered when the sap quit running. And, rosewood from India... whenever we could get them to answer our telex... lol :)

Now, we did make several special limited editions where walnut bodies were used in place of ash.

I'm a big fan of the sunbursts of this time period. I always felt that older 3-color-sunbursts were not as nice. The alder doesn't have enough wide grain, the sunbursts look like a bull's eye, and the center looked too yellow for my taste.

I do however love early 2-color-sunbursts.

By the by, thanks for giving up some more info.
