Hey,
I just bought an HSS strat with an S-1 switch but I'd like to re-wire it to split the humbucker when the S1 is UP and the 5-way is in the bridge position.
The S1 pickup diagram that came with the guitar shows the humbucker 'on' in both "S1 up" and "S1 down" positions when 5-way is in the bridge (#5) position.
I know it "can" be split because the same S1-Up diagram shows the 4th position as a split humbucker + middle pickup but don't know how to do it and haven't had any luck with diagrams on the net.
I'd like to change the 5th position/ S1 up, to have only the split humbucker.. and leave the "S1 down" 5th position as a full humbucker.
Does anyone have a wiring diagram they can post?
Thanks

I do like a challenge! If your Strat is wired like this one...

http://support.fender.com/service_diagr ... A_SISD.pdf

...then I might have a solution that would involve you soldering one additional wire onto the 5 Way Super Switch. It would be very handy if you could confirm the above before I start drawing up a diagram.

If your Strat is wired differently, then let me know and I'll have another peek to see if its do-able.

Hope this helps!

Andy

Andy,

We must commend you, the way you are always devising clever options for Super and S-1 Switches. "The wheels are always turning." :D :D :D

Thanks Martian!

I know its super geeky but I get a great deal of pleasure working out what you can and can't do with those two components. Its always a pleasant surprise when someone asks for an "interesting" selection of pickup combinations and its all do-able. Unfortunately, every now and then one of those "wheels" falls off and I forget how to re-attach it!

Of course, you Martians are way more advanced when it comes to understanding and finding solutions to this complicated wiring stuff.

For you "The Infinity Drive is always in a harmonious state of quantum fusion"!

I dig! 8)

+1 on Andy's technical support in these areas. He helped me with a beautifully crafted diagram and I see so many others he helped as I go back reading threads of interest.

Howdy!

Here ya go...

Image

The wire you need to add to the 5 Way Super Switch is marked in RED, just next to the smiley face. :D

As requested, the above should give you the following:

Position 5 - S-1 Off = Bridge Pickup - Upper coil only
Position 5 - S-1 On = Bridge pickup - Both coils, Series Humbucker

Everything else should work as it is currently.

Keep us posted on how you get on and Welcome to the Forum!

Enjoy!

Andy

Andy, you are the man! thank you very much for posting the diagram. even if it's a joke and my guitar self-destructs... good joke! haha! thanks man, i'll try it out this weekend and let you know how it goes.
having the option of a full single coil guitar and a humbucker just a push of a button away gets me pretty excited.
Thanks again!

Your welcome, but don't risk destroying your Strat cos' some random big hairy bloke off the inter-web told you to! Why not connect some crocodile clips to the jumper wire and attach them to the required terminals on the 5 Way Switch.

Once you've done that you should be able to test it by lightly tapping the Bridge pup with a screw driver (or something similar) while turning S-1 on and off. You should hear the difference straight away.

That way we get to see if I’m right without causing Strat-a-clysmic Guitar failure.

Keep us posted and Enjoy!

Andy

I see in the diagram that the neck and middle pup has a 3rd wires (blue/black/green and yellow/black/green. How do I wire my pickups if I dont have the green wire like in the diagram.?

Welcome!

In the diagram, the green wires are 'chassis grounds' for those particular pickups. In your situation, they are irrelevant. The blue and the yellow wires would be your respective white wires with the black wires remaining as per the diagram.
