My secret... stewmac.com, Stewart MacDonalds! They have every type of tools, jigs and parts that you can imagine. I have found their part # 0670 String Action Gauge to be indispensabe. Their # 0353 Understring Radius Gauge, # 1811 Feeler Gauges, # 3770 Fret Rocker and # 3850 18" length Precision Straight Edge are tools that every knowledgeable guitarist should have in their arsenal for maintaining their guitar in peak performance. There is no excuse for ignorance on how to setup your guitar especially if one has been playing for several years. There are several sites on the Internet (including Fender.com) with detailed resource material on virtually every aspect of the guitar. So that's my other secret... to seek out knowledge... to know where and how to find reliable information.

I make all my own slides. I have tons of them in different thicknesses and lengths. Glass and various metals. The secret is the best glass slides I've found come from a certain wine manufacturer.

While we are on the topic of slides, I just discovered a secret a week or so ago whilst reading something.

This was always a mystery to me and I must really be stupid, but it took me years to realize that slide guitar is set up to an open tuning!

slide isn't always set up in open tuning. whenever i play slide, I play in standard, because its a more familiar tuning.

a secret about setup eh?

....I switched the neck and middle pickups in my guitar when I installed a new set. they are vintage noiseless. While the mid and neck pickups have the same output and resistance, the pole pieces are staggered differently. I switched their places, and it makes my middle pickup have a bit more clarity in the midrange, which is where my old one tended to get muddy.

probably not a secret to everyone. but it does make a difference when you are dealing with staggered pickups.

Right - but certainly alot easier to deal with in open tuning IMHO.

Open tunings give you more tonal variation too. Tune to an open D and you'll see what I mean. Just the depth, power and emotion are unbelievable. Plus it's just plain fun.

Great tip - I have the string guage and use it all the time. I'll check out the other part numbers you suggest!

Thanks!

Here's one of my guitar secrets. I use Deoxit from Caig Labs on my strings. The stuff is amazing. I swear I get twice the life from my strings with it. When I restring, I spray a napkin and pull the new strings through the napkin... you wouldn't believe the grease and grime that comes off brand new strings!

Then I'll Deox every now and then when the strings start getting dirty. As I run my finger under the strings to check for wear, I also check for dirt... if I pull up some dirt, I'll use the Deoxit, again using a fresh paper napkin.

Hello Strataholic and all,

My tip is to keep your instrument clean.
Filth and grime doesn't really look inviting,

Cheers.
