I too prefer telecasters, but strats are not overrated, its just that there the only guitar people know and once they start playing guitar, thats all they want to get. Its that the strats had made a name for themselves that is that they are the best, but they are not overrated because they are still extremely awesome

Look up the definition of electric guitar in almost every dictionary and you will see the shape of the strat... just coincidence... I don't think so.

I hear this WAY too often... No, I don't think Strats are overratted. Absolutely not. The reason I play Strats more than other guitars is I find the tones out there to be nearly limitless and individual. When I hear a Les Paul, 90% of the time I hear the same tone. With Strats, I hear so many variations and personal preferences. Reason why so many people play them? They work. 8)

well put. no matter what you do with a les paul
it sounds the same.strats are KING!

I always hated Strats...then I rented one...then I bought one. They are have a voice of their own, and in as much as they appear to be a simple design, its hard to find much bad to say about them. They are tough, and comfortable. The only beef I have with them is that the p/u selector is kind of in the way. I also thought that Telecasters were ugly...then I rented one...then I bought one. I like them both. I always loved Les Pauls...dollar for dollar...they are nice...but largely overrated!

I think we all hit that selector switch from time to time. I know when I'm really into it and my right hand is just flying, I'll knock myself off the neck pup and suddenly I'm all bright and chimey. It's just something us strat lovers have learned to accept.

I'm pretty sure that the guy who started this thread meant "overrated" in the sense that the Strat is the most over used guitar in the poser community. I'm not dissing strats, i own one myself and it's the best, i'm just staying that when a poser gets a guitar, what do they get? something very, verrrry popular. I say we forget this forum, tie all the posers upside-down by their guitar strings and burn every stupid noob who can't play a lick of music but still buys a strat just so say they own a fender. Smoke on water doesn't count.

I don't think that Strats are overrated, they rock! I think it's more a matter of Telecasters being underrated, therefore they make the Strat look overrated.

I actually think the basses are the flagship of fenders design. Other people were mucking about with electric guitars before and at the same time as leo. Ok nobody got it as right as the broadcaster in those early days but there was direct competition. The electric bass on the other hand was a completely out of the blue invention.

Are strats overrated? No their strats, their not tele's, les pauls of flying V's. They are arguably the most practical and tonally divergent guitar around. Thats partly why the strat style is the best selling guitar type in the world. 3 million+ noisy dropouts cant be wrong :D

IMHO, I think Gibson guitars are the ones that are overrated and overpriced. You get a lot of good tone, beauty and feel for the price in a Strat.

i'm sure most people love their strat because of the overall shape (i like it better than the tele), the history of it, (usually) the 3 single coils, and they aren't into heavy death metal.

no way it's overrated. the strat and the gibson les paul are the best guitars in the world

Actually Strats are my favorite... And I do like Heavy Death Metal. But that's what my Les Paul is for.

I don't think the Strat is any more over rated than breathable air. You could do with out but it just isn't as good.

What!

Lets see... Hendrix, SRV, Clapton, Gilmore, Knopfler, Beck, Guy, Cray, Gallagher, Trower, Blackmore, Sheperd, Johnson, Mayer, Malmsteen, etc...

Some of the best players ever use a Strat... I wonder why :P I think that would rate the Strat pretty high!

Regards.
