No, I don't think they are over-rated. I suppose that depends on what we're rating them on though

  Indeed. For instance, as a cappuccino/espresso coffee machine, it is definitely overrated.

As a solid body electric guitar it got everything so right as to have remained to all intents and purposes unchanged since 1954. Imagine if we were still driving around in Model T Fords, cos, bar some tweaks, Henry had pretty much done it all off the starting block?

In fact, can anyone think of one individual who so bestrides any other technology as Leo Fender does the world of electric guitars, basses and amplifiers? What a phenomenon.

Agreed. I also think Strats are radically overrated as girl-attractors, best friends, and weapons in an arsenal. :D

Off the top of my head, Steve Jobs has done that: he has overseen and developed massive change in software, computers, consumer electronics, mobile computing, interconnectivity... even feature films and animation.

Ah.  I was sort of presuming that, like me, no-one would be able to think of an example. My ignorance is embarrassingly revealed... But it is still a bust of Leo that I have on my grand piano, though (so to speak).

Cheers, Jim

both guitars are awesome, and neither is overrated. I don't think so at least. It's just a matter of opinion...

I know a kid who told me once that he doesn't like Strats because "everyone plays them."

My response was "So you have two Les Pauls?"

Man, I tried to get espresso out of it all morning ... and nothing.
Where do you put the beans? What kind of amp do I need?

All the words we've expended on this nonsense: this gentleman has it in a nutshell. First post, too - welcome, Evon10000.

Surely that's the end of this thread, now?

I think when you say it's overrated, you mean that you seem them too much. There's a reason why you see so many Strat copies and they're used as the guitar model for many musical products. The Strat is clearly not overrated. It deserves all the fame and glory that it has. I have to say that it's the most versatile guitar that I've ever come across. You can see ads for blues music with a Strat, Rock music with a Strat, etc. It's a great piece of wood that deserves all this fame. Same with a Gibson Les Paul (but a lot of times, it seems that the Les Paul is always putting itself a little higher than it is.)

Hmmm. Remember that most of the ideas for computer design were taken from Xerox Park. These people ARE geniouses. They were the VERY first people in history to build a computer with a keyboard, mouse, and monitor with a GUI over the OS for user input and feedback. And, obviously, it never took... ;P since both Gates and Jobs 'borrowed' all of these innovations from them and now they exist in every computer in the world.

I'll give Jobs credit for the iPod and iPhone. All glory for Apple computers goes to Steve 'Woz' Wozniak - the technical genious. Jobs was just a very good cheerleader for most of the time back then.

i'm sure most people love their strat because of the overall shape (i like it better than the tele), the history of it, (usually) the 3 single coils, and they aren't into heavy death metal.

no way it's overrated. the strat and the gibson les paul are the best guitars in the world
