Yeah I think the Fender people looked at the The Highway One and said "how can we make this better?" The result of course was the American Special. I guess it really doesn't matter what you play, it's only as good as the guy playing it. :-)

I'm glad I was able to get mine when I did. It's a great guitar.

I am in the process of upgrading my new "old stock", midnight wine (rosewood), Highway One.

I bought a set of Fender Schaller locking tuners and have a set of fender Hot Noiseless pickups, a black pickguard and aged parts on order.

I hope to have it together by this weekend.

Did you notice the change?

One string tree rather than two.

That is the only thing different I noticed.

I have been looking for a good used one of these for a while...I want one of the early ones with the small headstock in blond. A buddy of mine had one and he wouldn't let that thing go for nothing and that was because it played and sounded fantastic. It's a great guitar and he still has it and it is still his favorite.

I installed a loaded Fender pickguard from Sigler Music on my Highway One Strat.

I went with Fender Hot Noiseless Pickups with aged covers, knobs and tips. I also installed a set of Fender Schaller (German made) locking tuners.

I am happy with how it looks and even more happy with the way it sounds. It aslo stays in tune much better.

I seem to recall hearing in late 2010 or early 2011 that Fender intended to drop the Highway 1's. The American Special was supposedly the intended replacement model.

If you get some rubbing compound and a cotton t-shirt you can puff that to a nice "soft" shine. I buffed my black one and it looks just like a black Strat body from the 50s (not brand new looking black).

Thanks for the advice - I may end up doing that. 8)

I shined mine up with Brasso (metal polish). Truthfully.. I got fed up of the shiney patch that quickly develops under your wrist and forearm.

Took 10 minutes and the results were instant and more than acceptable with very little rubbing. Just a slight orange peel effect very close up. It also hardened up that really soft finish all versions of the Highway Strat have had. Obviously it's not poly, but it's much more resistant to bumps and scrapes now..
