Hi
Because there is no direct Email add to Fender i'm sending this here writing this in the hope that someone can make a recommendation as to how I can proceed with my quest .
I am the owner of a' 68 Strat Serial No 251652 which I bought second hand in the north of England in '80 . The previous owner had literally battered hell out of it and the paint job was, what we now call "distressed " in the extreme . The thing that sold it for me was the neck, it felt very comfortable despite having a quite a considerable dent around the 12 th fret, so comfortable that I bought it on the spot for a good price with intent on a refurb.

So I brought it back down to London where I lived at the time and shortly afterwars went to my local shop which was incidentally just round the corner from Jim Marshall's original store to get the refurb started . After about 6 weeks I got a phone call to come and pick it up ,it was ready . When I got to the shop it had been hanging on the wall for about a week and the shop guy told me he had countless enquiries from people wanting to buy it.The work was completed and the new nitro paint job was stunning, traditional 3 colour SB with very little red, in fact now you can only see the red in photos .
I'd given the guy in the shop "carte blanc " because I like most people at the time did'nt have a clue about the finer points of guitars I just played 'em and liked the sound so he told me what he'd found when they'd "opened it up " and what work they'd undertaken what was changed and renewed which was very little in fact, just 2 P/U internally ,they were rewound and the paint job , new set of Klusons true to the originals ,and a new decal obviously and here's the rub .The decal was not right for the year and availability was, according to him, extremely limited .
You gotta remember this is nearly 30 years ago and the whole mystique of Vintage guitars was nowhere near what it is today ,and to me it was non-existant and I could'nt have cared less ,I had a new guitar as opposed to my Gibson LP, which had new sounds that I could add to my palette .
So to get to the point . I've decided that I want to fully restore the Strat to it's original spec .That means a new decal ,new saddles , the saddles are available but the decal ? I was in a store recently that deals in vintage guitars and the guy said that Fender would provide me with a decal is this true and how do I go about it ? 'scuse the long post and Thanks for any help . Niall Madden

There is a chance that the neck isn't original (that's why the decal might not be right for the time frame).
I'd compare the dates on the neck and the body cavity (that's if you haven't sprayed over the date), but personally, I'd leave it as it is, because if you get a new decal you won't have an original strat anymore and also it's value will decrease (if that matters to you).

....So my advice is just leave the decal as is.....and don't change anything on the guitar you don't have to, unless it's really not doing it's job.

The more original the better.

Hi
No ! The neck is original ,it's date stamped and it's been authenticated by 3 vintage dealers also the neck pocket has the original paint still as it was'nt removed during the refurb . When you open up a Strat there's all sorts of matching signatures and crayoned numbers from the assemblers which confirm authenticity ... Maybe it's stupid but I do want to make this change .

Check question #9. If you can prove it's a real Fender, they will provide you a decal, but there is no guarantee that they can get you the exact vintage-correct decal.

Wow - I feel your pain. I too would want it true to the original. Tough decision.

OK Guys .Thanks for the prompt replies. One of the reasons I'm doing this is for insurance ,it would be stupid to declare the value under what it's currently worth .

I had a '68 S/N 245126 that I changed bodies to a birdseye maple. I had all the hardware, with exception of tuners, electronics and I shaved the neck and cut down the head stock. Great guitar now but not vintage. Are your pickups the stock 2182's???

I think you should leave it as it is man. It could be quite rare and worth more than you think....but it's your guitar, so it's up to you.

Hey Sandwich
I know what t's worth , and it is sorta getting rare I've done my homework . I don't think the decal will affect the value but enhance it. BTW I'm from Limerick, long time in London , live in Germany now ,still know where Home is tho.
Thig is I was gigging last week and I caught someone trying to steal it so that's what got all this started . I broke the golden rule "Never let it out of your sight ". Applies to all valuable personal items . I gave him a right puck and he disappeared very quickly. I've got a small collection of essential items including a 25 year old Lowden and none of them are insured . Must get that done ,it's dammed expensive tho .G'luck

It's nice to hear that I'm not the only person from Ireland here.

...If you know what you want to do then go ahead, Just make sure to do it right. The decal is probably under the finish, so you'd have to get rid of the finish at the front of the headstock, remove the decal, apply the new one and respray the headstock (can look messy if not done right).

..You can find various websites and auction on ebay where decals are sold, but these are illegal, so you have to know where and when to look for them.

Also, some decals react with nitrocellulose or polyurethane, so you need to get a decal that'll be ok with these finishes over it.
